I live in New Zealand, it appears the XJ650's are very rare in this part of the world.

I am attempting a COMPLETE rebuild of my bike, I finally confirmed with my local Yamaha dealer it is an 1982 XJ650 Special (16F) I then asked them if they could source me a manual for the bike and it appears that they can not.

    Is this particular model rare?

I have been to my local library and I can get books for any maxim etc but not specifically for this bike.

It seems looking on the web only one person sells the manual for this bike.

Every person who I try get parts from says they don't stock parts for a Special / 16F only the Maxim's.

From my understanding the XJ650 16F (Special) Is just the Japanese made Version of the Maxim, it also looks the same.

Does anybody know if I can compare the bike to anything else when getting parts E.G 1982 XJ650LJ

If anybody has owned one of these or has any idea your help would be highly appreciated as I cant go any further with the project until I figure it out.

    Thanks!!

I hate to point out the obvious but I think I know what the "F" in 16F stands for......F****D.
I hope you can get a parts supplier and get on with the build, post pics as you go.
    Good luck.

Well not the XJ650LJ, that's the Turbo Seca...

Check with chacal. He also has this guide on VIN's (not much info on 16F there either unfortunately, but you can find other maxims) http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14577.html

Maybe the XJCD parts list can help as a crossreference

Maxim-X - Yea I'm beginning to think that lol Will definatly be posting pictures! If I can even get that far with it.

ManBot13 - Yea I know was just using that as an example as it was on a parts list I was looking at.

Is the XJCD a downloadable CD? Any part I have had shipped so far has been rather expensive :)

Len is the guy to go to for parts, and his shipping is pretty reasonable, even overseas.

    email him at:

Thanks Bushy no that's not it, i'll figure out how to chuck a pic up in a sec.

Are there any real differences between the XJ650 YICS engines that I should be aware of?

Cosmetically it seems to mach the maxim pretty well. It has 4L6 stamped on the engine and the 4L6 Frame code.

Just been reading through his restore and I'm defiantly inspired. :) Top job!

Makes me feel a bit more confident being on here having a whole network of people for advice as well.

Here are some pics of the bike, wouldn't let me do a higher resolution, from what I have read it was just the Jap made version of the maxim and they called it the XJ650 Special. 16F / 4L6

Well the strangest thing happened yesterday, went to start the beast and the battery was dead after I had the carb in bits.

Took it out the road to jump start it and a random guy pulled over and said Oh is that a XJ750 I said no its the XJ650 and he said I just sold a 750 and have some spare parts at home, I got his number thinking I would have a look and see if anything would fit.

Turn up at his house later that night and the first thing he says is oh sorry my mistake it was a 650.

I now have 2 spare carb racks, front forks (a little pitted but WAY better condition than my ones), 3 spare master cylinders, Axles, Levers, Chrome Gas cap not rusted which I needed, front and rear wheels and multiple other bits from different 650 models.

He even had a XJ650H manual which he chucked in, not the same but will get me in the ballpark I guess.

It isn't everything I needed but its a good start! :)

    short list:

    blinkers
forks and brake system if you want to go to dual-disc
    rims
    fenders
    tank
    carbs if you swap jets
    handlebars if they're buckhornes
    frame reflectors
    mirrors and controls
headlight bucket and mount if the round one
gauge assembly if it's the double-pod rounded ones
    starter
    shims
    few misc engine parts
    swingarm

    That's about it

I was referring to the last ebay link he posted, the pic on the haynes manual does look the same.

Yea the P.O took of all the badges, looks like the gold Special one will be the harder one to track down.
