I will start from the begining. I messed it up myself. i was charging the battery. with a old style battery charger. with no auto shut off or and safety devices. well to make along story short. the postive cable from the battery charger slide off to the side and started charging the frame. fried the little ground wire from the battery all the way to the ground on the coil and about two inches past the coils. ok so a bought i new used wiring harness. wired it all up. and know the ignition fuse keeps blowing if i leave the key on for more then 2secs. i found out the little connector on the tci box is the problem. the one with 4 wires. i unplug it and the fuse is fine. i can tell it draws a lot of amps when the connector is hooked in cause the neutral light is dim till i pull the fuse or it blows. is the tci box bad??? or where should i look??? i still blame my friend he borrowed my good charger. please tell me it is something stupid or cheap. i have put a lot of money in her allready this year. more then she is worth. i just keep reminding myself that i know almost everthing is new or rebuilt by myself. By the way i am working on a 85 xj700n air cooled. new motorcycle mechanic pretty savy auto mechanic. thanks in advance for the help and past help. would love to find some one local for hands on advice when needed. thanks again

Just sharing a similar experience I had 2 days ago after I cleaned out the start switch. It would pop the ignition fuse as soon as it was switched to run. I accidentally pinched a wire in the switch, a very very tiny tiny bit but that was apparently enough. Check the switch? The wires on a 30 year old harness are very touchy...

I will give it a shot still have to check for the four wires i know i can unhook a black connector in my headlight bucket. and it also stops the fuse from blowing. pretty sure that it is the other end of the connector on the cdi box so i am going to check those wires out too. thanks i will look into the starter button. but i didn't have to touch that yet. thanks again

Ohh... I thought that since you said you replaced the whole harness that you actually replaced the whole harness... If you didn't touch the wiring on the handlebar switches I don't think that would be it. But it never hurts to check. Just keep on poking around and following the wiring diagram and you'll eventually find it. If the wires on any of the harness are pinched even just a little bit they can ground out quite easily (as I have found recently).

At least it's not a car though, that could be a REAL nightmare... :( Good luck!

i did find out it only blows the fuse when it is in the run postion. haven't had a chance to use the multimeter yet. i didn't see any any pinched wire from the visual check.

I don't have permission to access that link... if it's blowing only when put into run then I had the same problem last week. It's gotta be grounding out somewhere it's not supposed to...

i cant seem to get it to work. if you know the cdi there is a connector with four prongs the two closest to the 5 connector harness is the two i am talking about. when tested they are connected together. liked they are shorted out.
