Alright I need a definitive answer...

Im going from a stock exhaust system to

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-XJ650-70 ... _500wt_922

What issues will I run into? Can they just be swapped out easily? Will it increase the performance? Will it make it louder? I like the single exhaust look better and my left side got damaged where I need to remove it anyway.

I need an exhaust like need to order it tonight... So thoughts opinions?

So you don't think I will have any issues going from 2-1?

Chacal has a jetting chart guide somewhere.
I have that 4-1 with the stock air box and a uni filter. I have it jetted 128/41 up from 120/40 to accommodate.

I have a 1982 XJ650J and I have that exact exhaust and mine runs great with it, didn't even have to re-jet.

I hope you didn't order it yet.

I don't think that particular system will fit your "X" model XJ. The watercooled motors have the head tipped forward at a different angle than the airheads; and I believe the on-center cylinder/exhaust port spacing may even be different because of the 20-valve head.

The exhaust system you found on eBay is for the "airhead" XJs. I would contact MAC directly and ask them if it fits the "X" models for sure, or if they even know for sure.

I could be wrong, but I would recommend some more research. Maybe ask Len for his input.

Darn it! I didn't even think about that. It is on its way but they offer exchanges.... Looks like I'll see if it fits if not... get something else. :(

Depends on your definition of "fabrication." I don't think you'd really want to get into having to re-bend all 4 head pipes and get them exactly right.

Man... What would you recommend exhaust wise then? My left one got really banged up as did the mounting bracket for it..

I was wanting to try a 4-1. Any other good ones? Should I just ask Len?

If the collector box is undamaged, and the RH side of the system is OK, I'd get on eBay and find the parts you actually need. It might be easier to just repair the stock system rather than replace it completely, especially if you can't locate the proper aftermarket system for the "X."

    DUDE!!

You said they do "exchanges" right?

Well looky what I found on eBay, for YOUR bike, from the same sellers! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-XJ700-XJ ... 67&vxp=mtr

You might want to get ahold of them before the other system arrives; maybe they haven't shipped yet.

Damn they already shipped... I think I'll let it get here and if it doesn't work I'll ask to exchange.

I laid the bike down and haven't tried restarting it yet. I am replenishing the fluids Didnt see any leaks at all. Put it was on its side for awhile...

Can I start it with the exhaust (headers/mufflers completely removed?

Could I for the time being put my stock exhaust back on... but leave the mufflers off? I know it would be loud.. :D But would it damage the bike?

that is a great find bigfitz one I will have to call them on.

I did some more research on your behalf.

-The "airhead" system won't fit. The one I linked you to is the correct one.

-Do NOT start it with wide open exhaust ports; you could damage an exhaust valve.

-You can run it with the stock headers and collector; and it won't be HORRIBLY loud. It won't hurt anything but it won't run right either and I wouldn't run it that way for long without adjusting the carbs.

I'll probably just put the battered one on there till I can ship that one back and get the other one. (darn it)...

Could I use the muffler from the one I ordered and the black headers of the other one? I'm going for a "midnight" look.

You're asking the wrong guy. Ask your vendor; I suspect they'll say "no." They might not have the same size/shape inlet pipe either, hard to tell.

You are probably right. Looks like I'll leave it stock till I can swap them out. (really wishing I hadn't already unbolted the whole exhaust system already. )

    Thanks again bigfitz

Slow down, don't rush into a "cobbled" solution.

Take the opportunity to order some new head pipe-to-head exhaust gaskets from Len. In this case (an aftermarket system) I'd use the "aftermarket" seals because they are slightly thicker to begin with and a tad more "forgiving."

Glad I was able to help you locate a correct system for the "X."

I'm assuming that goes from the engine to the pipes? Mine didn't appear to have anything there. Maybe it just deteriorated.

    Ordered the gaskets from chacal..

So let me get this straight I can run it without mufflers for a bit if need be? For testing it out and starting it up so make sure there are no leaks?

If I like the look/sound can I "tune" it to run w/o them altogether?

I Know it will be loud... But not nearly as loud as the harley's out here.

If you are referring to the exhaust gaskets have another look.....the old ones will be there.....they are sometimes virtually invisible!
