I have a 1982 XJ650J Maxim, I cleaned the carbs at the beginning of winter and the bike was running great. Since then I have put new carb manifolds(carbs to engine) on it and now it does not want to stay running. It will run fine with the chock open a little. I was thinking that the carbs may need cleaned again. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I would pop the carbs back off and see if the jets are dirty or have dried gas in them.

If you have to run with the choke on its not getting the right amount of fuel to run correctly.
Pull the fuel line and check your fuel flow, if that's ok it's in the carbs

I thought about that. I did switch the vaccum petcock for a regular on-off non-vaccum style one.

I just pulled the fuel line, it looks like it is flowing good but it may not be enough I'm not really sure.

Pull the carbs, remove the fuel/air mix screws/springs/washer/o-rings. Cover the tiny holes in the top of the venturi with your finger and put cleaner in the fuel/air mix screwhole. It should come out the siphon tube in the bowl if I'm not mistaken. Or i could be an idiot. Not sure!
Anyway, if ya have fuel and can't idle, carbs sounds right.

However I'm starting to think dirty carbs are responsible for everything. Even the dog crapping on the floor.

Just cleaned the carbs again, everything is spotless and looks great. Still wont idle without the chock being on. Has great fuel flow. What else if anything could it be? It is also backfiring now with new spark pugs.

Sounds like a vacuum leak.....and since you just changed the carb maniflods, I would start there.

I do have a problem with the new vacuum nipples on the manifolds being to loose.

Try spraying some carb cleaner around the manifolds with the engine running....if the engine speeds up, you have found your leak. A small vacuum leak will cause your engine idle problems.
