Rubber wedges between cooling fins??

    I just noticed that there are some rubber wedges between some of the cooling fins on my xj700n. They are not attached and seem to be just wedged in. Anyone know what they are and their purpose?

    They are vibration dampers.

    Thanks. Guess I'll leave them. Anyone know how many there should be? These just seem to randomly placed.

    My XJ650 has about 7 on each side. Because they are not in every tier and they are not in straight columns, first glance gives the appearance of randomness. When you study their placement, it makes more sense. Only on cooling fins of a certain depth, approx every other gap, in the less supported areas of the casting, etc.

    Someone asked about this awhile back and I posted pictures of both sides on my '82 750, I've had it since 1983 and unless any fell off over the years, I have 7 per side also, see my gallery for a picture of the right side for their locations.

    Didn't expect so much interest. Now I'm really interested in how many there should be, what happens if they are lost or removed, and where to get replacements if needed. Bet Chacal knows.
