I have made a few posts, asking about wiring. When I went to wire all of my components together, I had some difficulty with making all the right connections. This needs to be done soon, and we are running out of time, so I ask you; how should I go about making my wiring harness from scratch?

I am using this wiring diagram:

I don't understand where the issue is. You have the diagram, find the correct starting point and run the wires one section at a time to make sure you run all the one you need to the right places.

If you are having trouble with getting a specific component to work or finding a wire from a component we can probably help but you will need to be more specific.

Ps. I am just about to make a harness using this as my base as well

i did one using this, and what i just did, wired the starter and all that first, then ignition, then lights and all that jazz. I just went at it, trying to group new wires as i went. you'de be hard pressed to sit down, measure everything out, cut it, tape it all up, and just pop it in and be done.

what about turn signals. Its illegal in most places to operate a motor vehicle without them. Most people omit them with the minimal wiring, but I would rather other people know if I'm turning. It's hard enough to get others to see you as it is.

not that hard to add them in power to flasher to switch to lights to ground. I also have a horn, neutral light, and aux outlet drawn into my diagram.

Or leave them off and only wire up want you want to/need to for what you want.

I was just going by the diagram. Unless the harness is bad and needs to be replaced, I would just omit what you don't want. That would be less work as long as you have the proper diagram.

@Adrian of course you can pick one up on ebay or even here in the forums but its still 30 year old wire and connectors that you would need to go through, clean up, and hope there are no major issues. Build your own you know its all new.

Hi, thought I'd jump on this thread with my question as it's basically the same.
If this is ok with Timbojim?
I'm looking to do my own loom as well for my 81 maxim and am wanting to know the thickness and amp of wires for lights, ignition, start switch etc and for the higher amps, i.e, starter motor, coils, etc.

Just starting out so forgive the question if it should be obvious :?

pay someone else to do it!

just kidding, take your time...you cant really rush building a safe wiring harness if you dont want any loose connections or shorts, the minimum diagram works but youre on your own as far as wire length

btw, turn signals are harder to see than arms in my opinion and arms never burn or short out, im not saying dont use them but if you dont (as long as your legal) its all good

your stock flasher/self cancel wont work with them. you can get them to work with a new electronic flasher and can get the self cancel to work by adding in a relay there is a write up here with how to do it.

also your forks are 36mm so those wont fit without at least adding some kind of shim

Hmmm ok thanks for that, I'll be looking for something else I think.
So a stock flasher/cancel unit will work with any arm indicators?

the bulbs need to draw enough current to run it which is darn near what the stock bulb draw, or you can add resistors to make up the difference, if you want to keep the stock flasher/canceler.
