EDIT 2: The Hi-Temp Black exhaust paint I'm considering drys to a SATIN finish.

So I'm not a big fan of chrome and really like the LOOK of the HD Night Rod (not necessarily the flat black, just the blackedened look), but not quite the FULLY black Midnight Maxim look.

I'm going to be painting some parts this season anyways and I'm trying to figure out if I should paint my exhaust (glossy) black or silvery.

I want to paint my chrome fender(s) glossy black as well as my front forks (while upgrading springs and rebuilding).

I will painting/repainting the valve covers while replacing the shims. The cover will be glossy black and either bare aluminum ridges/YCIS or silvery painted ridges.

I WANT to partially blacken my engine and its covers and possiibly a few other parts (ie the pumpkin, the rear foot peg triangles, etc). However I don't want it to be 100% black (ie aluminum/silver fin edges).

I haven't figured exactly how much/which parts of the engine will be blackened yet. So pictures of similar repaints would be nice.

Without a mocked up blacker engine, do you think the exhaust looks better black or silver on MY bike with the fairings/luggage and custom decals? I'll work on mocking up the engine, but I'd like to order the exhaust paint SOON.

So regardless of my late night/early morning rambling here are some sample in processes pictures of the RIGHT side.

Original - Just added white Yamaha on tank to simulate my custom decal I had made.

Black Fender, Forks and Exhaust - Pumpkin left untouched to highlight fender.

    EDIT:

ROUGH Mock up of Silvery Fins

either 2 or 3 I like the painted fender and forks when you have all the luggage and fairing on a bike

2nd pic for me, semi-gloss on the forks and exhaust, high gloss on the fender. Then paint the rest of the bike orange. Just kidding. LOL

I had to go back and forth a few times between 2 and 3 to figure out what the heck a 'pumpkin' was. That's the first time I've heard it called that.

I can pretty much guarantee that you won't like the exhaust painted silver, it looks worse than chrome.

    For the footpeg brackets:

And if you plan on using a rattle can, check out the metalcast or shadow by dupli-color

How about with the side covers black?

My 550 had the triangular side covers. I think its just an odd shape for the side of the motorcylcle.

Triangle doesn't match any shape on the engine and the aluminum color doesn't blend with the seat. It sticks out.

+1 Polock. Just ride it. Wish mine ran right now.

It's not running ATM so it's easy to PLAN projects, and wait for paint to dry while shim and Carb parts are ordered.

Besides, the last 2 years I rode thru November then it got cold fast.

I like the black exhaust, engine with fin edges polished off. The front fender gloss black but polish forks like tsaz's also the foot rest brackets and engine side covers. Stainless steel fasteners will look better than those ones with the rusted heads.

Probably right, but hard to paint in winter w/o a garage unless get 50F days...

Maybe I'll get a "heater" for my shed before winter... :)

I just used a spray-on/water-off degreaser on the engine before pulling valve cover this weekend... It got most of the oil/grime off, but you are probably right I should wait till winter to paint the engine. LOTS of grime, left over paint flakes and crevices on the fin'ed section of the engine.

So no rush to paint engine... I have the unopened paint already though :)

I'm not sure if I'll FILE the fins but who knows.

Why did you chose to leave the LOWER engine aluminium vs. black? I haven't decided on what to do with lower end and removable covers YET.

IF I can swap out exhaust systems w/o replacing all of the gasket$$ I'll probably wait to paint the exhaust also... I DO want to ride this season LOL.

Youll find you have to file, you just cant take off enough material by just sanding... go at it with a rasp and get em well squared -- decent amount of material removed -- then use a less rough file, then 600 paper then 1500. In fact I sanded and removed even more material since those photos were taken... The fins have a good taper and youve got to get down below that

I didnt paint the case because I hadnt removed it from the frame -- AND - If I had spent one more darn minute on the refurbishment (easily 150 to 200 HRS+ hours for what you see) -- my wife was going to leave me -- It was a tough decision for a bit but sleeping with the bike is cold

Re: Wanted: Paint Option Feedback / Sample pics - Blacken En

I'm done for the night tweaking in Photoshop. Realistically the repaint will be a winter project, but I'm trying to nail down the general look before I even bother starting...

I'm open to comments especially if I made it look to dark or tacky. (Yes everyone's taste is different but I'm listening).

    This photo revision:
    * Upper Engine (Jugs?) - Blackened with Exposed Fins - Guessimated as the details get lost
    * Lower Engine - Blackened and SS bolts on covers
    * Round Cover Faces - Exposed Aluminum - Not mirror finish
    * Stands - "repainted" black and spring shined up
    * Exhaust - Black
    * Front Fender & Forks - Black
    * Rear foot peg triangle, alum part in front of the triangle and swingarm cap - Black
    * Aluminum Part of Rims - "Brightened"
    * Pumpkin "brightened" and yamah logo painted around

    Comments and things under consideration:
    * The Maxim Triangle will remain aluminum/silvery
    * The grab rail under the seat MAY be blackened
    * The backrest/luggage rack chrome MAY be blackened
    * The pumpkin/rear break drum MAY be blackened
    * Crash/Foot rest bars MAY be blackened - would need a different angle/better pic
    * I kept the shift controls and crash bars chrome/alum/silvery to better emulate the Blackened Night Rod bike along with the SS bolts on the cover
    * I'm not sure what I'd do with carb bodies and hats yet - Maybe black hats and soda blasted bodies (cleaner looking aluminum)

Note: In my late night delirium, I named all my left side view pictures RIGHT. LOL. It only matters if you actually look at the file names on photobucket.
