    Just thinking ahead:

If I remove the engine for cleaning/painting (and maybe the frame as well) what parts/gaskets SHOULD I ABSOLUTELY buy for the reassembly?

Best cast scenario, I simply remove engine, clean, paint, regrease and regasket engine-to-transmission and reinstall engine. Is it way more complicated than that?

Any one able to provide a basic list of parts/gaskets I'll need for a basic engine removal and reinstall?

Granted I might do stuff like swing arm bearings and stuff, but I'm just curious how much work and $$ it really is to reinstall the engine.

If it matters, I'd probably strip the bike and lay it on its side to lift the frame off the engine INSIDE my 8x8 shed or my unheated/powerless 10X30 storage unit (harder to get engine back home for winter work).

For starters anything rubber such as engine mount vibration isolators would be my choice

It would depend on how much work to the bike you have already done, and just how detailed in a restoration you want to go. I took my completely apart, but left the engine intact. I actually will only be replacing the engine cover gaskets. I bead blasted the engine and left the covers on. I was just careful with the blasting. I then taped up the covers and repainted the engine. Now I am removing the covers, stripping the clear off and polishing them. I found all of the bushing and such to be in great shape, so If I wanted to refinish the covers on the bike, it would be more labor intensive, but would save a bit more money.

As for budget, mine has been huge, because I have been very meticulous in everything else. I just didn't want to split the cases and refinish because the plant was in very good shape. Aside from tools, I will have close to $4k in mine when it is all said and done. Bear in mind, I did hire some work out, like powder coating the frame and some other parts. So far, the most difficult thing I have done on the bike bike is refinishing the wheels. If I had went the most affordable route, I would have less than $1k in it.

Assuming no engine problems I'm considering removing engine intact just for external cleaning and painting.

    Cover removal = more gasket$$

I just don't know how many gaskets and wear items should be replaced when pulling and reinstalling engine.

I got all seals and gaskets from chacal, and WILL be replacing them.
You should consider replacing the internal chains, especially if you find ut that the primary chain guide is worn/split.

ATM I'm not considering engine disassembling, just removing for full scrubbing and painting.

I'll email Chacal when I get a chance...

Just want you to think about the chain guide in there. If the motor is out you are half way there. Just sayin, might be a good thing to change out while the motor is out of the frame.
I would think about it if it were me.

OK - I have plenty of time to think about internal maintenance I SHOULD do :)

Still just trying to figure out what I ABSOLUTELY NEED/SHOULD buy for an engine removal/paint/reinstall project. I guess I'll have to did through Chacal's item post :)

Old thread here, but . . . I have my perfectly sound bike stripped to the bare frame mostly for preventative maintenance and some light cosmetic restoration. Touch up the frame paint, and pretty up the engine and a little more. Found this old thread and wanted to know more about the "internal chains" that should be checked or replaced. Can someone tell me more about that? What chains? Why, frequent failures? I'm at 25K miles with a bike that actually seems to have had sensible PO's. Any other similar recommendations, while the engine is out? Definitely checking both sets of brushes, valves, polishing side covers with new gaskets. School me please.
