Typo in the title of this post, it's an 82 not an 84

I've this problem with my maxim. After I first start it up for the day, I can ride it a few miles and it will quit running just like it's getting no spark. It will then coast for a bit and backfire a few times but if I pop the clutch it will usually start right up again. Once in a while I'll have to stop completely and hit the starter but usually it'll start right up again.
It may do this 2 or 3 times then it will stay running and I won't have a problem withit for the rest of the day.
Anybody have any ideas what this might be? I can't figure out if it's a sparking problem or a fuel problem.
Any help will be greatly appreaciated.

Could be a number of issues. 1) Iffy TCI module (cold solder joint and/or failing capacitors). 2) Iffy connection on your Run/Start switch. 3) Iffy connection on the sidestand switch.

    Just tossing out some ideas.

Thanks, for the input and not to sound dumb but could you explain what the TCI module is?
I can't believe the problem is in the run/start switch or the sidestand as the problem only seems to occur when the engine first reaches full operating temp. Is there a temp sensor somewhere that may be failing?

The TCI is the black box behind your left side cover (sitting on the bike).

Two plugs going into it, it's held to the bike by two screws. There's no temp 'sensors' on these old beasts, btw =). Take the TCI to an electronics shop and get them to have a look at the solder joints... 10 bucks says there are a bunch of cold solder joints that need cleaning. Sounds exactly like my problem, and cleaning those up has had my bike running stall free ever since!

Thanks MWhite74 I'll definitely give that a try.
