1Hey guys, new member here, new bike owner, been reading the forums all day and now I've got a question.

The front brake on my 81 xj650 is stuck and wont allow me to take off. I just purchased it from a fellow and I made him rebuild the master cylinder before I took the bike as the front brakes did not work. He must have over done it and now they are pretty stuck. How do I release pressure, or completely disengage them? I couldn't find any direct answer to this and I'd like some advice on where to start with my own from scratch master cylinder rebuild. Thanks for helping me out!

The calipers corrode between the dust seal and the main seal. Remove the brake line and gently pry the caliper off. Then put the line back on and try to force the piston out of the caliper. You'll see what I'm talking about when the piston comes out.

The calipers are stuck and will not release, its is a common problem. They will need to be dessambled and rebuilt, our resident parts guru Chacal can get them for you. Click the XJ4ever banner at the top of the page and PM him.
    Things you will need:
    A good service manual
    caliper kits
    brake pads
consider replacing the rubber brake line if it is original
If the master cylinder has been rebuilt then OK. I would still inspect it(don't ever take the previous owners word that he rebuilt it.

Read through the manual. There are maintenance items that probably need attention. Brakes, valve adjustments etc.. It is a new bike to you, make sure its is safe to ride. Just because it works does not mean it is safe.
