Just got this bike, did the first oil/filter change. Carefully reassembled as I had found it. Was flipping through manual and noticed they had the spring at the opposite end from what my bike showed. Assuming prev owner screwed up.

So... went back, unbolted it and sure enough, the way it was on the bike did not really make sense based on where the holes are.

Also, from the service manual pic below, I also did not have any of the three washers (although I think the two on either side of the filter are probably part of the filter and attached to it).

So I reassembled per how the manual looks, and positioned the filter so that it made a snug fit against the chassis (O-ring side).

Can anyone verify how critical that washer (or washers) is?
    And where to acquire one?

And assuming the PO was driving around for a while with the spring between the filter and chassis, would that have caused any serious/permanent damage?

The old oil was a dark tan, did not smell burnt, and didn't have any shiny bits.

The bike was/is well maintained, and runs very well otherwise.

    Thanks!

    David

I hope you've still got access to the old filter, as you will probably find that the washer you are asking about will probably be stuck to it -mine was.

Yes, the other 2 washers are the rubber ones that are in either side of the filter and should either be in the filter, or come with the filter

    Thanks for the tip.
I do have the old filter, but no washers on it :(
Definitely need to make sure my oil is clean and fresh then.
    Bummer

The washer is there to stop the spring trying to widen the gap in the rubber washer on the filter, and slipping into the filter

XJ4Ever has the washer. Don't fret it, that washer "sticks" to the oil filter and about 90% of them got thrown away the first time a non-dealership oil change was done.

It is a good idea to install one at some point; but it's only there to protect the rubber ring from the spring.

It's more important to ensure the filter is installed correctly with the flat side toward the motor and the "dished" side outward, toward the spring (as illustrated.)

Thanks for confirming that guys. A local guy has an extra pair of those washers so I'll install them on next flush.
    Cheers

You only need one, between the spring and the rubber ring on the filter.
