Hi I am new to the site I have had my xj650 for a couple months now all was well until last week when my bike fell over in the grass and then wouldn't start after a week of trying to start it I finally disconnected some sensor under the tank then it started but it backfired like crazy so I got excited and thought that was the end of it so the next day I tried to start it and nothing I'm still getting a weak spark but will not start need help now please thanks

Some sensor under the tank? You don't have a sending unit, since it's a 650 (unless someone put a 750 tank and set up the whole gas gauge, which is highly doubtful), so what 'sensor' are you talking about?

Did it just backfire on starting, or continue? Did it run fine the rest of the day, and then just not start the next day?

What happens when you press the starter?

Are you keeping the battery charged?

I don't know what dropping it in the grass could have damaged, sounds odd. Which side did it fall on? I can only think of going over the electrics. Maybe your battery didn't like being tipped on its side and isn't working properly now?

Are the headers/exhaust doing ok? Just a thought on backfiring, since it fell, though it's probably more about a possibly flooded engine or something. I don't really understand why a bike backfires when it hasn't been started in a while sometimes, other than a poor mixture. Someone else might have a clue.

No idea what you disconnected that made a difference underneath, it might just be unrelated.

Have you tried bump starting it?

how did you come to the decision to disconnect 'some sensor'? It's not a good idea to start doing random stuff to your bike trying to get it to work. take your time and come to the experts here first. You don't want to inadvertently cause more damage.

Well the sensor is a roll over sensor an idea from another xj owner that happens to live down the street and the battery is fine it fell on the right side and no it didn't start i think that the backfire issue is a carb issue probly was in adjusted when it fell. It starts but won't really pull up a hill all that good had wet plugs I changed those out I'm going to see if these ones are wet too I'm just really frustrated and I love the bike just need to get it back right thanks for the advice so far I will continue to update

Check your float levels. It may be possible that they got stuck when it fell over.
