The infamous fusebox

    I just looked at it and my first thought was "this crap can't be factory"

    Although, to be fair, at least some of this looks like the consequence of repairs.

    What are those two wires with the spade terminals? They appear to go to the fuel tank in the vicinity of the petcock. Fuel sender?

    Also, the separate fuse holder. Is that normal, or another repair?

    While there, I discovered a couple of Easter eggs from previous owners that I do so love in all of my vehicles. The fuel tank is not attached, the bolt that I assume should hold down the back of it is missing. Also, the fuel hoses are so loose on the petcock that they fell right off when I moved the tank to see where the wires go. At least now I know where the gas smell is coming from.

    without being there to root around in the harness, its hard to say what they come/go from/to...

    get an owners manual or a shop manual with the color coding is the best advice i can give you...

    Well, the one with the inline fuse is a repair for the 4th line on the fusebox. The clips get brittle and break off. Have you seen posts about replacing the entire fusebox? Here's mine.

    Don't be too quick to assume. You could have a leaky petcock or a sticky float. Welcome to the world of 30-year old bikes; investigate-- don't assume anything.

    The stock fusebox can be replaced with a modern ATC-type box, replaced with a nice NEW old school glass-fuse unit, or you can rebuild the original:

    I'm pretty sure this is at least one place. Does not exclude anything else.

    I'm coming from the world of $500 cars and working in tech support. Nothing is what it seems, and people lie through their teeth.

    That's nice work.

    I'm not a stickler for originality and I like soldering. I think I'll go for a new blade-type box.

    No, mine came from O'riellys. The day mine died, I fixed it the same day instead of ordering. But, I think Chacals might be a 6-slotter in case you are looking for extra capacity or two spares.

    Mine is still original and in perfect BUT dusty shape. I lucked out as the bike has always been stored in a garage by PO's.

    That won't prevent the original fuse clips from crystallizing and spontaneously failing all on their own. Honest.

    The broken fusebox and dangly holder are no more.

    The spade connectors have heat shrink on them to keep thing neat and non-shorting.
