How is the handling? I am preparing for the rear wheel to front conversion and also have to get that kit. I bought a extra rear wheel already.

Handles awesome. Better than stock for sure, however the guy stopped making the kits and the directions aren't that complete. It takes a bit more work than is noted in the plans.

 

Nice look on a bobber, especially with the white walls

When I called him for some help with the kit (bad bearing included with the kit and milling specs that were off) He said he wasn't going to be selling the kit any longer due to people having problems with fitting the kit to the bike and he didn't have time to deal with it. Don't get me wrong the kit is nice and Matt is helpful but the instructions on the kit are vague and every setup will be a bit different depending on clearances and what wheel you use (XV or XJ).

Over all I'm happy with the kit and Matt (very busy guy with kids ect) but from the trouble I've had so far (bolt backed out of the hub and shredded speedo cable and speedo drive unit) I'm looking to do a R1 or R6 front end swap so I don't have to worry about non oem fit and the problems that comes with.

Thanks! The tires are Shinko 777's. So far they stick a lot better than my dunlop 404's I'm waiting to see how they wear though.

Where did you get that seat and how did you mount it? PICs please?
did you cut the inner (plastic) fender? more PICs please?
Where did you get the rear shocks from?

Compliments on the bike man it looks AMAZING! this is about as close as to exactly what I want that i have seen. Only I want it a little older looking (maybe some pin striping on the tank)

Hey I'm not associated with the bike at all but just from looking I think those shocks look like aftermarket "Slammer" shocks. I have been looking at the same models 10.5'' eye to eye for mine just haven't wanted to spend about 200 dollars on them. Just look on ebay for 10.5'' aftermarket shocks and a bunch will pop up.

This is a very nice bike though I am looking to do white walls on mine as well except it is painted army green - going for the retro army look. Posting pics of progress soon. Good Job!

 

I'll get a pic of that seat soon but its a west eagle Thin HI Back seat from TC Bros.

The inner fender is completely removed all thats left are the plastics from the battery box and tool crib.

The rear shocks are 9" Burley Harley Sportster lowering springs.

 

Beautiful! I like the look of those rear shocks. What brand/part number/ length are they? How much did they set you back?

Edit:didn't see the 2nd page. I'll have to find myself some of those shocks!

That is one of the best looking XJs I've ever seen! I want mine to look similar, I love the front tire/wheel mod, I'll have to look into that for mine. For a lowering that much in the rear, did you have to lower the front at all?

 

Really like this bike. I found it the other day whilst Googling for modification ideas. Great work.

Look's good. One question: Why put the smaller rim on the front? To me, I think it would look better with the rims reversed or the same size rims. Just seems a little off to me, still like it though.

 

Rims are same size front and back. 16in rear is on the front to run a wider tire. Stock front on the 81 maxim is a 21 inch wheel with a narrow tire.

 

Bar end mirror I got at a mountan bike shop.

The pic from the side and the pic from the rear looks like a 16 in front and a 18 on back. Guess it's one of those optical illusions. I thought all original XJ front rims were 19's and not 21's. I would love to have a 21 on the front.

I wish I would have kept it. It was great around town bike. It just couldn't comfortably do the miles I wanted to do with it. The next owner painted the tank red and threw it up on craigslist for $500 more than I sold it to him for. I wish I could find it again cause I'd buy it back.

 

Im starting to rebuild my first bike and was given a maxim. i love the style of this and would love a more in depth description of what you did to achieve this look. everything from the drag bars to the larger front tire.

 

Stock gauges and no turn signals. Got to love michigan laws.
