Tried removing the right side mirror but it wouldn't budge, Kroil didn't help but it did loosen up the left hand side nicely. Felt some motion but it was the bolt shearing off and it snapped flush, right next to the brake fluid reservoir.

So I need to drill it out and use an easyout to remove it and then put in another mirror rod for the right side. I think the one from my 650 will be the same and I can find another over the winter.

Any suggestions I should know about before I try and get this out with an easyout?

If the easyout doesn't work I'll need to tap it.

    Just to be sure...

Is it an OEM (or OEM style) master cylinder with REVERSE threads? IE Lefty Tighty Righty Loosey - Opposite of the left mirror with normal threads?

Other than that make sure you get the correct thread style when you buy a new/used mirror.

Also let it soak over night with Krol (or similar) since the mirror is sheared off now.

The mirror on the master cyliner has LEFT hand threads. Standard easy outs are for RIGHT hand threaded bolts. You will need one designed for LEFT handed threads to remove it. Start with a 1/8 drill bit to drill a pilot hole, be sure it is centered. Then go to a 3/16 bit to see if you can make it grab and spin the broken stud out.

Hmmm Reverse threads... Maybe that was the problem? Yes, it's an OEM mirror and looks to be an OEM master cylinder. I didn't know about reverse threads.

If this is the case, I'll need to get an easyout with reverse twist. I have kroil resting on the stub to hopefully loosen it.

I can use the mirror from my 650 and then replace that later when I find another mirror.

    Rats...

    & thanks!

Yep; reverse threads on the right side.

They're made that way so if the mirror snags something when the bike is moving forward it will unscrew rather than break.

For future reference: Look closely at the locknut on the RH mirror stalk. Notice a "cut" around the nut, so it almost appears to be two nuts stacked?
That's the indication that it's reverse threaded. Sometimes the "cut" is just a series of "pips" in the ridges of the hex; but almost all reverse-threaded nuts are marked in some similar manner.

for around $30 all up at the moment you can get both mirrors brand new , not original but they suit this bike, in fact they are identicle to the ones on mine, they are from tialand(how do you spell this place) .they are on ebay australia, type in xj650 in the motorcycle parts bit.

If you broke it cranking the lock nut counter clockwise the remaining piece may not even be very tight. If that's the case mlew's advice is spot on - make sure you use good bits so it'll grab.

did the same thing to my right side mirror a few weeks ago, had no idea it was a reverse thread mount. also explains why i snapped off my easy out when trying to remove the remnants.
    back to the drawing board!

Well, I sure did it. I did try and wiggle the nut and it didn't budge so I put kroil on it, let it set an hour and then tried to slowly wrench it off. It came off alright... Now I've had Kroil on it for 10 hours so it'll probably come out IF I twist it the right way.

Fitz, yup, I saw the slot around the nut & it did look like there was a 2nd nut on it. The nut was mangled pretty bad so someone else had unsuccessfully tried to move it and rounded off the high points.

I'll have to buy a reverse easy-out the only ones I have are not going to work on this gem.

I'll rob the one on the 650 and then replace that one.

    Grrr...

And to make it more fun, none of the hardware stores around here have an easy out that goes for reverse..

    Lovely

You already have a whole bunch of them I'll bet--

They're called DRILL BITS. A drill, drilling into what's left of the stalk, will be trying to unscrew it as you drill...

Another SCORE for XJbikes & the collective! I just came back from the garage and I used as Fitz has said numerous times; "Kroil" and this stuff loosens stuck bolts like nobody's business but theirs. It's excellent. As Mlew said, maybe drilling it out will loosen & Fitz was dead on again, it came out with the smallest drill I used for the pilot hole, didn't need the larger bit at all. It started to spin & stopped. When I drilled through the bolt it latched on and threaded itself right out.

I'll see if what's left of the arm will suffice to hold the mirror on while I go get the mirror off the 650. I can't slide the lock nut on as there's not enough thread to sink into the female. maybe though I can get it to work. If nothing less, I have 40 miles to drive to get the replacement from the 650 & they look to be the same style (same year).

A sigh of relief and a little tad of disappointment in myself for not having read or remembered the right side mirrors screw on reverse.

Hopefully someone else will read this thread in the future and save themselves a PITA.

    Thanks for the advice!

    Don't be to embarrassed.

My aftermarket MC is regular threads, so if I had followed common Yamaha logic I would have snapped mine. Good thing they were loose when I bought the bike :)

I'd like to get Koso GT Diamond mirrors (look at eBay). The kit come with threads that fit every possible mirror - even Yamaha reverse. (The threads are seperate from the mirror - like a universal power charger plug). They are only around $25 shipped.

    Here you are Gary,
These are stock lights and master cylinder from a XJ1100, these lights are for the rear but the front look the same. The lights are a little bent and the chrome is pitted but teh lenses are good. The right mirror has some pitting in the stem but is still nice and useable. If you need any parts from them let me know.

i think you're wasting your time with it..i suggest picking up another master cylinder from e-bay... i got one new for 30 bucks with a regular thred so i can run ANY after market mirrors..yamaha is weird in fitting it with a reverse thred... stupid... but if you do want to play with it... like ^ said...drill it out... punch the centre so you can drill it out straight... another suggestion *take it off the bike when you do*... and use a drill press cuz a regular hand drill will go each and every way... and you will never get it right... you'll get it... but don't be afraid cuz there are other ones out there is you mess up...

I'm not sure about every model, but on my Maxim my current aftermarket (and those seen on eBay) do NOT have a spot for the front brake light switch or the brake fluid level.

I have a used OEM MC I picked up that needs to be rebuilt. Eventually I'll install it with new SS lines and have the brake light up when I pull the front brakes.

So depending on your model's features, you may or may not want an aftermarket MC.

Ah, I knew it would pay to search before I started trying to muscle this damn mirror.
    Thanks XJ Forum.

    +1.
Except I wish the PO would have read this. Then they wouldn't have rounded off the nut and seized the threads. Out comes the hacksaw and drill ...
