Hi Ive just bought an XJ900 1984 I rode it home 150 mile and it ran fine.
however one week later I rode to work and on my return the engine started to rev on its own as if the throttle was stuck open.
Now the bike will start and run but only idle at between 3 and 4000 rpm ?
I have pulled the carbs down and cleaned them they looked not to bad.
Ihave replaced nothing apart from a new battery.
The bike starts with or without choke and choke opperation makes little diffrence in RPM. the bike just starts up easy and then revs as though the throttle is half open any ideas.regards Gaz UK

Was it sitting for a time before you bought it? Tell us in detail what you did to the carbs. (did you take them apart, did you soak them, etc)
Check around the carbs, intakes, and vacuum ports for air leaks.

Enrichment circuit issue? Plungers all stuck open? Stuck cable? Stuck throttle slides? Throttle cable issue? Throttle body? Intake leak? What was done to the carbs? Need more info......

    -valve clearances
-carbs clean for real; you shouldn't need to polish the slides; just be sure they're clean.
    -float levels precisely wet set
    -vacuum sync w/YICS blocked

    IN ORDER.

Carbs frequently LOOK clean; you can't see inside the tiny passages. Half hearted efforts won't work; either they're truly clean or they aren't.

If you don't do it right the first time, you'll be back at it again and again until you do. You too can become a member of the "I've cleaned my carbs five times" club. Your choice.
