I have just replaced my rear turn signals with some cheapies to have smaller ones that can be better mounted out of the way of my saddle bags. Finished that up, replaced the fuse box in the process with waterproof inline units. Everything works fine except the turn signals go on solid when switched on. Turn on the right, both rights light solid, same on the left. If I plug an original in, it works normally. The replacements say 12 volt, 23 watt on small bayonet mount bulbs where the glass is about the same diameter as the metal. Sorry for the lousy picture, handheld macro focus. I put a pair of these on my previous 81 Maxim 650, this is an 83 Maxim 750. Any clues? It seems so simple, and once again, it just ain't. Glad I got my fuse box done though. The tabs broke as I removed the fuses. Big problem averted, small one created.

the new bulbs don't draw enough current to make the flasher work.
you need different bulbs or the flasher guys use for led's and loose the cancel function

Thanks Polock, these bulbs have no identifying marks except the V/W. Any guess what type of bulb those are? They are pretty small, maybe 3/8 or 7/16" diameter and 1-1/8" tall, from memory, not measured. She's put away for the night. Seems like 23 watts ought to be enough to flash. But if there's brighter ones, I'm all for brighter lights any where on my bike.

Just go with the electronic flasher unit, they are cheap, then you can run whatever bulbs you like.

Thanks Wizard, but can you be more specific? I'm definitely a little clueless with the electrics. Is a new flasher relay going to eliminate the self-cancel feature? Any particular unit I should look for? Or some rating that makes it work with these smaller bulbs?

This from ebay works. Extra wire goes to ground.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't had time to work on it for a bit. Then, this weekend I needed to go somewhere on the bike. As I rode, the turn signals worked fine when the rpms were 2k or higher, but just stayed lit solid when the revs dropped as I stopped at a light or stop sign. Anybody want to chime in on whether that still sounds like relay or bulb voltage issues? Or is some deeper electrical gremlin developing? My battery is a cheapy but not too old and it starts with a touch of the button. Also, I am still not clear if that Ebay relay Metal Bob mentioned will retain the auto-cancel function. Or, if I even need a relay given the new info. Thanks all.
