So i was riding down the road doing about 50 and my dust cover near the shaft on the back just busts off and starts freely spinning between the wheel and the shaft, it gets caught up and starts to lock my tire. luckily i didnt fall and came to a fast complete stop. but now it sounds as if there is a grinding inside when i ride it. I'm wondering can i just take this dust cover off and ride as is , because it seems as if that is the only thing causing it to catch up.

are you talking about the rubber shaft boot that covers the U-joint? if so I suggest you keep a cover on it since it is directly connected to engine and you wouldn't want other crap getting caught in there...

Reads to me more like the universal joint or th bolts that hold it have a problem, especially as it " just busts off and starts freely spinning " coz all th boot has to do is casually flex up and down a bit. I doubt a piece of rubber is going to make a sound " as if there is a grinding inside when i ride " . Any metal flakes, slivers, hanging about in that area ?

Sounds to me he is talking about the metal dust cover that has 4 bolts that mount between the wheel and the final drive. If that is it, I would not recommend running without is, it will just let road debris in and prematurely wear the seals and bearings.

The shaft boot doesn't spin on anything. If it has come loose and both ends and snagged on the shaft pinion bolts, then it could be getting spun around with the shaft. Either way, both need to be intact in in good order.

^^^^^This sounds like the correct part.. The bike should still be drivable though right? It is just a starter so i am not to worried about seals going after awhile i just need it to get me by until i buy a new bike

Well, if it gets in a bind, it could catch and lock up the wheel. It is metal, and won't get shredded as easily as rubber. It is very easy to remove the rear wheel and then just take off the cover. You run the risk of running the seals and bearing if you run without it though.

Stone, you really should pull your rear wheel and replace that cover, it keeps stuff from getting between the final drive and the wheel. Just for example, lets say a piece of wire got in there, you'd have a lock-up situation. This part is attached with 4 pan head Phillips screws. A dab of locktite on the threads will keep this from happening again.
