So I just noticed a small leak near wear my oil filter is. I'm wondering if this could be due to tightening it sideways, or if I have a bigger problem

    Thanks

There's a couple of alignment protrusions to help you install it "straight".
Loosen it with a catch pan, wipe the mating surfaces clean, you may have trapped dirt on the "O" ring, re-install and add a pint.

Probably the o-ring on the filter housing. Fram filters come with a new one which I replace each time I change the filter. What did you mean by "tightening it sideways?" If yours is like mine, there's a tab on the filter housing that fits into a slot on the engine--at 12 o'clock.

Over-tightening can distort the covers O-ring, causing a possible oil leak. My manual says 11.0 ft/lbs-pretty easy to over-do if you dont use a torque wrench.

I had a problem with a leaky housing, I used some red gasket adhesive on the housing side, then torqued to spec. Let it cure overnight before starting the bike. No leaks.
