I bought my 1985 xj700 Maxim with 1500 miles on it in 1986 and have had it ever since. I've always wanted to replace/fix a few things but didnt' have the cash. It's time to revisit this.

The front fender has a deep scratch about 2 inches long with 3 or 4 more shallow ones next to it. Took it to a body shop and they said for what it would cost them to fix it I'd be better off buying a new fender. Anyone know where I might find a replacement in mint condition in that beautuful burgundy color? (not sure what the factory color for it is called).

Also I need a new engine cover (left side in front of the shift lever). I'm assuming it's protecting the points? It's scratched.

I also have a problem with oil leaking out around the final drive gear oil bolt. Anyone else have this problem? I have cleaned it really good and put it back on snugly but it continues to collect dust around it as a slight fim of oil develops around it. Drives me nuts.

    Thanks!

Get that scratch out of there all by yourself. Just take the fender in to an AutoBody SUPPLY Store and have the guy give you:
    Small Can of MarGlass
    Hardener
    Glazing Putty
    Sanding Papers to do the job: 80, 180, 220, 320, 400, 600, 800
    Rattle Can of Primer

    Engine Cover:
eBay ... (Or ... sand and finish-out the one you have if the rash ain't too deep.

    Ass-end Leak:
Wrap the Drain Plug Threads with 4 or 5 wraps of Teflon thread sealing tape.
    That takes care of that.

    What else???

    Welcome to XJBikes.com russ668!

Once you get the fender primed, I believe this (Sparkle Maroon) is your original color:

Which should match a bike of this color:

These "factory colors" are not available just anywhere, although several folks have said they were going to try to get their local shops to match their bikes.

That would be it! THat's the color of my girl. These bikes are just beautiful and I'm so happy to have found a group of folks as devoted to theirs as I am...

Okay another question. I've seen several threads about replacement fuse boxes but in the pics I've seen I don't seem to have a fuse box. Anyone with an air-cooled '85 maxim xj700 with a fuse box that's failed?

The fender is pretty bad and I'd hate to screw it up, maybe if I order the paint I can take it in and have it professionally done. Thanks for the link to the paint color!

Teflon tape on the leaky drain plug seems like a work around instead of a long term solution. But I'll give it a shot.

I have a brand new maintenance free battery and a battery tender coming this week...my carbs should be done this week and I'll be getting the headers back on after a lengthy shine session. A quick oil and filter change and I'll be ready to bring this beautiful thing back to life!

If it's the drain plug that is leaking......

Next time it is out take it up to your local auto parts store. Have them fit it with a copper or nylon washer. This is instead of the stock washer (if it's still there).

The, um ... Teflon Tape IS a work-around solution. It's also long-term; too.

The Teflon Tape wrapped threads bring the "Seep and Leak" to a screeching halt ... and works around the clock; forever.

Some fixes are easy. Thankfully. Because there's not enough easy fixes to off-set the big pile of un-easy fixes. I'd recommend wrapping those threads to everyone. Insurance don't come cheaper than that.

You might be getting away with the Fuse Box fix ... too! You might be one of them lucky guys with the fuses already snuggled into a fine, "New" fuse panel beneath the bezel between the instruments.

You godda be gettin' psyched-up, now ... huh???

Right on..teflon tape it is! Thanks RickCoMatic...and everyone here actually. Great group!

Yeah that would rock if I didn't have to mess with the fuse box thing. I'll have to get a book on this bike soon.

And I've figured out that I need the Oil Pump Cover. It's scratched pretty deep. Ebay only had ones for the Maxim X (man that's a popular bike). I think that's what makes me cherish my bike even more...seems as if the air-cooled versions are a little more rare.
