    Greetings, all,

I've read many threads about putting sportster mufflers on various models but can't remember anyone talking about whether they were able to pull it off on the liquid-cooled model. I have one and would like to swap out the stock mufflers but I know they are temperamental when it comes to engine tuning.

Anyone successfully done this and have any words of advice?

    Thanks.

I know we have different bikes. Maybe this will set your mind at ease or not.
I put on the shorter tapered pipes on my 82 XJ with no tuning.
It ran and idled right after the swap. There may be some fine tuning to do but I haven't noticed a need yet.

I hope someone with a liquid cool comes along to give you sound advice.

Won't work....it will develop an annoying oil leak, only run on two cylinders and have very little power :p :p :p

Took too long to get back on this thread, but I guess the next question is: can the X's exhaust be successfully modified without serious (or expensive) work?

Just dreaming here. I've got some other maintenance that's taking priority on it anyway.

I guess that depends on what the meanings of "sucessful", "modified", and "expensive" is.

Oh, man, I totally thought Mike was serious with that business!
I was thinking, "man, all that just from swapping mufflers?"
Ok, but seriously, would it work on an X?

I'm about to put some sportster 883 stock mufflers on my 650. Price? $0 plus install (I know a guy). Even though the displacement is 35% higher, the horsepower is about 65% less, so I'm betting that the necessary flow is not significantly higher or lower. And it's gotta be better than what I have, for more than just flow reasons.

I'm not real sure what your displacement is (i'm thinking 700, is that right?) but if you find that your bike is running too lean and you can't correct it, you're out about $50.

But if anyone asks....LIE LIE LIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The sportster mufflers have enough back pressure to keep it running well without re-tuning the engine. They are similar to stock mufflers, just a bit deeper tone to them. Not loud at all. I'm referring to stock Harley Sporster mufflers, not the Screamin' Eagle mufflers.

Gee Whiz, I am personally surprised at some of the come backs to this question? I personally think someone is trying to screw with some one's head or something??? I'm not a real teck at this stage but I have read in here before by members that have consistently gave good advice that you can basically run straight off of your collector with out re-tuning so I personally don't see why running Sportster mufflers on an XJ 750 should cause an oil leak ect.? Now I think you said that your bike was smaller but the comment was that you would develop an oil leak and end up running on two cylinders? I really don't understand that coment? Could we see some further explanation to that coment? We are talking about a 4 cycle engine are we not???? Dah-did I miss something? grunt007, 81'XJ 750 SecaR, Mi.

They are jokes... Harley's leak oil, everything associated with harley davidson is orange and black. Harley's only have two cylinders where as the XJ's have four. So what they are saying is that if he was to put harley pipes on his bike (AS A JOKE) it will start turning into a harley.

I think captluv should supply us some pictures when (if?) the mod is completed. I know a lot of people have scratched/dinged mufflers and are looking for alternatives.

Personally, I think the Sporty mufflers look great (on the Sporty) and I'm wondering if they'd look equally good on the Maxim. Otherwise, it's off to JC Whitney...and I'm a little scared of that route.

I will certainly post pics, it's happening this weekend unless something totally different pops up.

Of course, my maxim doesn't look like most...

Well, they're on there and they run great, like the sound (pretty much the same at idle, but a lot less at speed) but LOVE the fact that it no longer sounds like it's about to explode and blow my ears out at anything above 4000 rpm. It sounds a lot smoother, feels a lot smoother (but that could be illusion) and I shift a LOT less, now that I don't mind bringing it up to speed a bit.

It's not ready for pics yet...it's rigged a bit weird, still gotta mark and weld.

Well, I know it's been a long time since this post was started, but I finally got those mufflers on and it is, indeed, fantastic.

What I had to do was go to a muffler shop and have a guy make me two 1 3/8" to 1 3/4" exhaust adapters. I had a friend help me out who knows how to weld and work metal...we hammered (with a mallet) on the adapters to the collectors, then he fabricated two hangers to bolt the sportster mufflers to the existing holes on the rear footpegs. We used muffler clamps to tighten up the mufflers to the adapters and voila. No exhaust leaks that we can detect, bike runs great and sounds awesome.

Have not pulled the plugs yet to check running condition, however.

Just thought I'd add this footnote as I finally got it done after wanting to do it since buying the bike.

EDIT: tried to add an image, but it didn't take, sorry.

Hey captluv here's your bike, looks pretty good too.
The only change I'd make would be to get the clamps facing inward so that you dont see so much of the clamp, threads and nuts.
    My 2 cents
