Might be wrong but I'd check the coil for cylinders 2/3 might have an intermittant problem i.e sometime theres a spark getting to the plugs for cyl 2/3 sometimes not.

I'd agree with ferret on this one. I just recently had an issue where the 2 and 3 cylinders were only firing if the bike were revved up to 4000 rpm. Then they would kick in.

I replaced my coils, wires, caps and plugs with Dynatek DC1-1 (3.0 Ohm), by-the-foot bike shop wire, NGK caps, and NGK plugs respectively. Cost me about $180 all together, but it was totally well worth it.

As for the petcock, partsnmore.com sells a rebuild kit for $20 that is really easy to do. That should keep it from leaking like a sieve.

You can ohm them out with a multimeter or you can do a run test.
Pull the plugs, ground the bodies and turn the sucker over, observing 4 sparklers (out of season but who is counting). You should see the sparks occuring in firing order and evenly across. A blue to white spark is good. Orange to yellow is bad.
    Coil test in a nutshell.
Down side to test. Bad plugs could give erroneous readings so have a fresh set on hand, properly gapped too.

    Multi meter test.
2.3 ohms on the primary (where the harness plugs in)
and approximately 10,000 ohms between the positive lead (again from the harness side) and the cap on the end of the wires (I might be recalling this spec incorrectly, feel free to step in and help out here).
