My Seca has developed a click that I can feel in the handlebars when stopping fairly hard, then it clicks back when the deceleration is over. If it is 'just a click' I'm OK with it, but I suspect it is the beginning of something that could affect steering or stopping,

Souds like your steering head bearings might need some attention. Could be a regrease or possibly just a tighten up.

Put bike on main stand and get someone to push down on the back seat, when front end lifts of the floor grab hold of the forks and push and pull and check for movement, whils your at it swing handlebars left and right and check for smooth operation?

If its the original ball bearing type it probabbly a good change for some tapered head bearings.

Also check front wheel bearings similar to a car grab wheel top and bottom and again push pull and check for any play.

Push and pull forward and back on th front wheel for head bearings, side to side for wheel bearings and as Capn' said tapered bearings are are better. Fixed my clicking.

+ 1 on the steering head bearings. My 750 Seca did the same thing when the original bearings became worn out & loose. Highly recommend the tapered drop-ins for a vast improvement.

On the lift with the front wheel off the ground, I'm not able to feel any abnormal movement in either steering or wheel bearings--however I'm also not able to duplicate the amount of force the fork sees when stopping 750lbs or so.

Wouldn't the labor involved in regreasing be almost as much as replacing with a tapered roller set?

The fact that you will most likely lose a couple days searching for that tiny ball bearing when it falls out, and rolls to whereever they go is worth the change to the tapered head bearings.

I checked this morning, and I was glad to find that it is, since I'd already ordered a bearing set from Chacal.
