something I have never had to worry about but I have just tried to insure my bike and they are asking me if I have a standard xj750 or a seca . For some reason a Seca is more to insure than a standard XJ750. I must admit I thought they were either Secas or Maxims .

My frame and engine number indicate its a XJ750 A model , so what oes that bring me to ??????

The Seca is considered a sport bike. While the Maxim is considered a cruiser, or standard bike.

The sport bikes are generally thought of as more for the go fast type rider which in turn unfortunately leads to more damage/injury in the case of an accident. Due to this the insurance companies charge higher premiums for the sport bikes.

This will tell you all you need to know to determine whether you have a Seca, or Maxim.

well heres a pic of what it was , does look like the 650 seca frame but definately doesent look like a sports bike

I think I may list it as what the insurance called a "standard" xj750 before I start listing the mods

Just an excuse by the insurance company to charge more. The Seca may look more sporty but when it boils down to it I don't think they were any faster than a Maxim. Now handling may be different with the anti dive forks and such, would make the bike corner and handle better.
I would shop more insurance companies and see if you can find the best deal possible.

That is an XJ750 Seca. Ahem.......read between the lines----Looks like its a "Maxim that has LATER been modified to LOOK like a Seca"------. hint hint hint HINT...

If anyone asks to see a pic, drop a 750 maxim tank on, carefully borrow a couple side covers and a seat, stand back and take the pic.

This s not a 750R type of seca....the race-y ones. This is a plain-jane seca, that is almost no different than the maxim other than some cosmetic differences and minor other stuff

It definitely looks like a seca.

I'd always advise against lying to an insurance company. You'll get away with it just until you get into an accident, then they'll be able to wash their hands of you because YOU lied. Doesn't make a difference if it's a little white lie, unfair, etc. Insurance companies may be the scum of the earth, but they'll make you pay if they can and when it hurts the most.

Now to make it even more confusing!!

    Taken from above posted link

    COUNTRY: JAPAN

    MODEL NAME: XJ750A
    STREET NAME: 1981 XJ750
    MODEL ID CODE: 5G8
    FRAME ID: 5G8
    SERIAL NUMBER STARTS AT: 000101
NOTE: uses the XJ650RJ Seca frame, but has the 750 engine.

    MODEL NAME: XJ750D
    STREET NAME: 1983 XJ750
    MODEL ID CODE: 5G8
    FRAME ID: 5G8
    SERIAL NUMBER STARTS AT: 020101
NOTE: this model features fuel injection.

NOTE: Although the North American market was treated to three different versions of the XJ750 model (Maxim/Midnight Maxim, Seca, and the previously mentioned XJ750 Maxim-X versions), the rest of the world generally had only one version available, and that version is most similar to what is known as the XJ750 Seca model in North America.

Although not generally referred to in the overseas markets as a "Seca" model (since there was only one model available, there was no need to give it a "name" needed to differentiate it between a base Maxim model), these overseas versions came equipped with the "scalloped" design fuel tank, gauge package, and other special components which are normally found in the North American XJ750 Seca models.

The pic of the bike clearly shows what is considered to be a 750 Seca in the US. As evidence by the remote front brake M/C, anti-dive forks, Side covers, and tail cowl. BUT! It also clearly shows that the bike is carbureted, and not the fuel injected XJ750D. This may be a modification!

But then again! It does not appear to be the XJ750A. Which would be a factory design of mating the 750 engine into what is considered in the US as the '82 XJ650R Seca chassis. The bike in the pic does not fit that description either.

Either way. It is an import to all markets other than Japan/Oceana (incl OZ, NZ), and would be considered a standard model in every market except North America.

It would have to be a 5G2 to be clasified as a US Identified 750 Seca.
Any insurance company should have the abiltiy to properly ID the bike from the VIN.

cheers Ghost . I think I will just go to a Motorcycle specific insurer and do it from the frame number , that way there cant be any confusion , next thing is I wonder how much they will charge me for the bodywork modifications. It hasnt been changed power or brake wise yet but I guess its more Stealable
