I just rebuilt a 2nd set of carbs and replaced all the rubber, except for the diaphragms cause they all looked fine. On the other carbs I replaced everything except the throttle shaft seals & diaphragms. I've never been able to get the engine RPM consistent, there's always been some blips to break the continuity every couple of seconds.

I have new throttle shaft seals on this 2nd set and I put them in this week. With them, the engine runs like a sewing machine and nothing else was replaced. :)

I'm a believer that the seals make a huge difference and tuning is a lot easier because that air leak area is sealed.

When they're all done they're all done and yes it's critical.

However some of them seem to lead a charmed life and last a good long time. There seems to be no consistency whatsoever to any possible "determining factors."

Kind of like intake manifolds. I've seen reasonably clean bikes with horribly cracked manifolds, and horribly ragged motors with perfectly pristine intake manifolds.

I'm so glad to have just put all that new bicycle tire rubber on my intake manifolds... replacing the throttle shaft seals and and fuel shaft seals, too.
