Can there be a foolproof way of identifying an engine that I just purchased? I bought it for parts to fix my transmission. It is a YICS motor that looks identical to my XJ1100 engine but has a kick start shaft on it??. What bikes were built with a kick start YICS in addition to the electric starter?Any help in identifying and determining if I can use this for my XJ1100 is greatly appreciated.

I don't believe the XJ1100 had a kickstart -- might be an XS engine.

If nobody else here chimes in, I might suggest stopping by XS11.com -- they should have a good idea how interchangeable the tranny parts are.

I think you are right. It doesn't have th YICS port, only the valve cover says it. All the rest seems to be identical. I hope the trans gears are the same. I won't know until I research it more and take it apart. The main case number is 3H4-001096.

The 3H4 identifies that motor as a1979 Canadain XS11 Special. They did come with a kick start. It did not originally come with a YICS head, someone put it on at sometime. XS and XJ 1100 engine parts are interchangable.

Got side tracked, here is more info.
That engine will bolt into your XJ11 frame. You will need the ignition pick-ups and alternator from your old XJ11 motor and install them into the new engine. That is the only difference between them besides a different valve cover.

I was just cross referencing and found that too. someone has installed a YICS valve cover on this engine. the oil pressure switch is in a different location also. 99% of the parts That I need are interchangeable except for the cylinder head. It doesnt really matter since I have the YICS tool installed in the port on my running engine anyway. Now I think I need to get the necessary cd's for each engine and make the best engine out of the 2 with all the parts. I will also have tons of spares!!. Must search for complete engine gasket kit to accomplish. Now a Caterpillar engine tech trying to fix a bike!!
