New Guy Has A Few Questions...

    Hey guys, just got an 81 maxim 650 that needs a bit of work. I need a gas tank and a new set of carbs. What other models of carbs and tanks would fit this bike? I was told that the carbs are the same except they have different jet sizes on the 550, 650, and 750. Do the 550, 650, and 750 tanks interchange as well?

    Do you really need those parts meaning they are missing or are they in rough shape and you want to replace them?

    Reason I ask is that there is tons of info on the site about cleaning/finishing/treating/fixing/helping/modifying tanks and carbs.

    I'm replacing both. The tank has tons of dings and dents, and there are boils all over it. The carbs I am replacing because they are far from salvagable.

    If your tank and carbs arn't salvagable I suspect you're going to need more than just tank and carbs....

    Have you had a look through the buy/sell/swap forum yet?

    Well the reason for the tank being messed up is because when it was stored, something fell onto it. The carbs are ruined because the owner let them sit in cleaning solution and pretty much forgot about them. One of the carbs is almost completely corroded and brown. The rest of the bike is clean. So what will fit?

    I don't know about the carbs... But I'm pretty sure the 650 and 750 maxim tanks are interchangeable. And also I think the 650 SECA tank will fit without mods.

    Carbs should fit from a 650 or 750. The 550's I dont think will fit. Basicall you are looking for Hitachi carbs, 80-83 I believe. There are a number of them on fleabay at the moment. They should probably sell for around 100 to 150. Fuel tanks as well. I would look for the larger tank from the xj750 Maxim. It holds more than the 650 tank.

    750 tank is 19 L while the 650 is 13 L so your best bet is finding a 750 tank, it will drop right on the 650 frame.

    I wonder what the setting difference is between the 650 carbs and the 750 carbs...

    I thought they were mikuni's? I could be wrong.
