Hi everyone. Please excuse me for my lack of knowledge on this subject. I really hope that I can explain this well and the answer comes swiftly.

I just seperated the cylinder head from the motor to drill and tap some broken intake bolts. I am now trying to put it all back together. I have followed the Haynes manual word for word, and am now at the part of giving the crankshaft one full rotation back to TDC after setting it to "C" to adjust the chain tensionor. I can now not make a full revolution with the crankshaft.

Summary: Trying to rotate the crankshaft is getting stuck and not allowing me a full rotation of the crankshaft after setting the chain tensioner.

Please help if you can decipher my writings.

    Shawn

you have a cam out of time and your hitting a valve!!!!!dont try to force it to turn or you will be buying a valve, recheck your cam timing...

Thank you so much for the quick reply! I will take the camshafts out and start all over again.

    Great advice Old-Grunt!
Let me give you a few hints on installing the camshafts. One easy thing to do wrong is to reverse the camshafts, so make sure the exhaust camshaft is in the exhaust position. Grab the camchain and stretch it out like it will be on the sprockets to make sure it is still on the crankshaft gear and that the slack is out. IF it is off have a friend hold the camchain and rotate the crankshaft back and forth just a little until it grabs the crankshaft gear. Then return the crankshaft back to TDC while holding the chain taught. This can be done without harm to valves since the camshafts are not in place. <<<IT cannot be done with the camshafts in.>>>
When placing the camshafts in position orient them with the timing marks aligned and one bolt holding the sprockets in place. Then start tightening down the cam caps. Once they are down it will be easy to slip the sprocket off and slip it back on with the camchain on it. Do this until the chain and sprockets keep the timing marks aligned. This is a good time to bring out the paranoid nerd in yourself and start checking things over before rotating the crank. When you first start rotating the crank make sure the camshafts move also. If they don't then the camchain is off the crank gear. Pull one sprocket and stretch the chain moving it from side to side and it usually catches the gear.

I you timed it right; and its still "Bunking-to-a-halt" ... you're going to have to
check and see if the REAR Chain Guide is seated and locked in place as it should be.

While you have the cams out I would suggest making note of your current valve shim "values" to possibly aid in future valve clearance adjustments.

Silly at this Sounds I'd take the head off and Check the Valves with a Dial Gauge. Unless Very Gentle with the crank turning the likely hood of having bent a valve or 3 is High. Once bent all 4 intake valves on My Alfa just by tirning the Crank by hand during a "following the Manual' Chain tensioner adjustment. At least you will be spared the having to dismantle a reassembled /running engine to replace all the intakes IF you check 'em NOW.

I want to thank all of you SO much. I really appreciate all of the in depth help.

I completed the assemly of the engine today after checking all that you suggested. I am proctoring tonight so I will not be able to crank the motor until tomorrow. I will return and report if I get it cranked!

Thank you again for all of your help!!
