Finally got her (83 xj750rk) on the road, and she just screams down the street, I like that part, but she also whisles when going down the street, with the clutch out, but it won't make the noise in my garage even on center stand going through the gears, I've heard simalar noises from other bikes but not quite this loud.

I don't know if this is something to worry about or not, I was thinking clutch discs, but she grabs great, really wants to do a wheelie, I can see why the last guy burnt off the back tire in 8000 miles, she's a fast bike way faster then my 79 cb750f was.

    Thanks in advance

That may be the rear end gears. You may want to check the fluid level in the rear end. Since it only seems to make the noise while under a load. Easy check. Just pull the plug on the side of the diff and take a look. If fluid is at the top, your good. If low, Go ahead and change it. I would probably change it anyway. If you havent all ready. Just use some 80/90w hypoid gear oil. cheap insurance

Here I was thinking the worst something in the tranny, and over looked the easy, I'll check that tommorow.

Wow 12 years of working on cars has made me brain dead.

Your former Chain-Drive Life moves into Shaft Drive, now ... right?

My son, you just might be hearing the infamous "Middle Gear Whine" ... for which our beloved XJ-Models are well known for ... world wide!

    Yeene-yeene-yeene, neee-nee, yeeeeeeeeee!

That sweet Middle Gear singing the only one tune it knows ...
    Nice.
    Shaft drive rules.

That could be it, sounds like a belt drive bike almost, that kind of weerlie or whisle noise, I have a 77 goldwing with shaft drive and have also had a 82 silver wing with shaft drive and they were a lot quieter.

But if it's a normal noise then I'll just ride it,

Oh ya the gear lube was full, but I changed it anyway

My Maxim makes the same noise, and it drove me absolutely crazy until I found out what it was! Now I just imagine its a jet engine winding up 8)

I noticed when I hear that screaming noise, I look up and it's a Yamaha. Mine used to drive me crazy, but I must be used to it now. It seems alot of 4 bangers have a certain noise about them. It seems to come from the top end and the Yamahas are the loudest I've noticed.

I always loved that whine (charger) kind of sound from the maxim 650, it was a more predominate sound on the 650 then the bigger bores and my 1100 doesn't do it at all. I wish it did as I love that sound.

    I miss that whine.
After I changed the stock 18 to a Virago 16 rim, it was even more noticable. Hell, I'd keep it at six or eight grand just to hear her sing.

I was wondering what that was

Funny thing is though... I really can't hear it when I'm giving it a fist full... Might be because I'm too busy holding on :p

I'm seriously loving the power and comfprt of my stunning ride... Fills me with joy :D
