Unfortunately, the exhaust kit I was hoping to get from Jama seems to have fallen through. I won't go into details on that experience yet, but rest assured I will.

So, I am in the market for a good 4-2 exhaust system for my Max.

Bump. Got an exhaust, but the only useable pieces are the mufflers. If anyone has or knows of a GOOD collector and down tubes, please let me know

Most of the bikes the collector box is rusted out and the rest is good. Ever thought of making one? There are a few here that are tring to make collector boxes. Not sure how it's working but you might want to PM chacal see what he knows.

I may have to. As frustrating as trying to get a complete 4-2 system has been (tried to get a new one to start with) and now trying to piece together used, I am about ready to give up it. I'll give Chacal a try...

As MN mentioned, if anyone knows of someone that is making collector boxes, please let me know.

    Check into this... http://www.5thgearparts.com/modeldetail.cfm

I was looking into getting these before i found a set in the classifieds. The seller sent me more pics of them and they look really good! Pipes are for an 82 750 maxim.

Telling us that you're having trouble finding those parts is like preaching to the choir. We know those aren't easy to get.

No kidding... I have the junk collector box that I got and that will become a cadaver for exploratory surgery. I am going to take it apart, and see how difficult it would be to make one as similar as possible. I am still looking for down tubes and collector in satisfactory condition to get the bike functional for now. Ultimately, I will try to find the best tubes I can and have then re-chromed.

Good luck on finding a plating shop for the headers. All the shops around here won't touch them because they are double wall tubes. They tell me there is some kind of problem if there are cracks in the inner tubes somehow can mess up their chemical tanks.
I just gave up and put a MAC 4 into 2 exhaust on mine and it works just fine.

Thanks MN, I have never heard of that, but will certainly call back and ask about it. If that is the case, and they won't replate, then you may have just saved me a whole lot of money and wasted time.

There is an alternitive to chrome. A couple of guys sent theirs out to get Jet Hot coated. The pictures looked real nice. Not as nice as chrome of course but it does the job and keeps the rust down.

Not mine. Ad on my local CL: http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/mcy/3123045681.html

Here's the text from that ad:

1981 Yamaha Maxim Seca 750 Complete Exhaust System - $75 (Snohomish)
    Date: 2012-07-06, 3:18PM PDT

This is a decent Condition Exhaust system. It has some surface rust but is still very functional.

Yep, been looking through that kinda of stuff for a week or so. Today, I started looking into just making a new system...sans the mufflers. I researched tube bending, and the sand filled methods seems as though it would produce the best results. Instead of the collector box, I started drawing up an x-pipe design collector. If I can bend new tubes, and get the x-pipe built, then I can have them Jet hot coated inside and out.

Sound like you have it under control. However, for $30 you can have my xj550 Seca collector...if that helps at all. I don't know if it would fit a 750...probably not. Anyway, see the 4th photo here in my CL ad: http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/mcy/3108299930.html

Iv'e seen the MAC 4 into 2 advertised, but it states it's only for the seca. Being new to this bike and restoring an '82 Maxim with a completely shot exhaust, I was worried whether it would fit. Did you have to modify it at all to make it fit? I've toyed with the idea of the 4 into 1, but not only would it ruin the look of the bike, but I've read it would have to be rejetted.
