Popped out the piston, seized with brake crud, oil, etc... with a good polishing the piston and bore are nearly perfect.

The rebuild kit with the large ring, and the smaller labyrinth ring go in perfectly. Piston fits in the bore without the rings, but after a brake fluid lube on the rings and piston, I can't get the piston in the bore more than 1/4"

    What am I missing here?

Twist the piston while pushing it into the bore. That will help get it starte on the main seal. Once it is past that point it will slide in easy.

I haven't tried that, I'm hopeful it will work though.

How clean are the channels the seals sit in? ANY crud left behind is too much. They need to be "dentally" clean.

And if you get the piston cocked sideways even slightly it will bind up and not slide in. If everything is right it will go in with pressure from your fingers.

The grooves are cleaned at low speed with a medium-soft wire brush in the dremel. I'll double check everything and re-do anything, I may have forgotten in a cloud of brake cleaner vapors.

Good info on how 'finger tight' that piston should be too. It doesn't seem hard to get that piston in crooked if you aren't paying attention.
