Just bought a 82' 650 maxim off craigslist for $200. The good it runs good, no frame damage, and a title. The bad it needs a gas tank which I read a 750 tank will work, a seat since it doesn't have one, has 40k, and needs a paint job. Questions Wanted to know what I should do while its apart? I do plan on getting an engine reseal kit since it leaks oil in the exhaust. Any advise is appreciated.

    woah!

    THAT'S a deal!

Sorry I wish I could be of assistance but I'm in the process of acquiring my first one soon. Just browsing to see what other prices other people have paid.

Check out the carb cleaning link above. among other things you should really pull the carbs and clean/inspect them. after that, brakes (especially rear), fork seals, and valve clearances. mine looked just like that when i picked it up, but little by little they do clean up pretty nice!

Do plan on rebuilding/cleaning the carbs. It does need fork seals and rear brake I found out when I took it around the block. Luckily the front worked, as far as paint I like the black/gold of the midnight maxim so was leaning toward something similar but with a gold painted motor w/ black accents. Here's some pics of it currently.

Got a few things done so far. Been debating on engine colors lately. Wanted to go either a gold motor with black trim or flat black with gold trim? What do you think

black with gold trim is probably safer the gold with black trim might be a bit overpowering, but it might not look bad either. Best thing to do is try and play with colors in some image editing software.

Check with chacal. He might have gold carb hats and gold tank trim. Maybe some other goodies to help you get the look you want.
    Good Luck
