Anyone ever done this? I looked through forums but couldn't find anything...

If I ran with out gauges I imagine I'd have to fine some sort of cap for the cable that runs to the engine so it doesn't leak oil, even though it already does.

    Thoughts anyone?

i ran an 85 maxim x w/o gauges it had an electronic tach and i removed the speedo cable... got sick of it and am now running a vapor gauge...
something you'll quickly learn here is any reasonable goal is more easily attained than you would first imagine... everything seems way way more intimidating until you do it.
what year and model are you riding/working on?
(you may want to put that in a sig... the wizards and old boys get rather agro when that info is not provided when they try to help you)

^That's interesting. Glad to know it works out that easy but now I'm wondering why mine leaks from there when the little thing isn't twisted on tight enough...huh.

    Any thoughts on that?

I'm curious is there any reason in particular that you don't want any gauges? Seems like it would be a pain not knowing if your engine is getting close to over heating, or if you're running too hard or not hard enough, or how fast you are going?

I know with my maxim it is different than any of the dirt bikes that I'd rode where you just hear and feel it. These bikes like to cruise around 5-7k rpm and mine red lines at 12k. Not to mention it is very easy to speed if you don't watch it... Maybe its just because I am newer to street riding lol.

I just want a different profile. They're so stinkin' swoopy, these XJ's. I think the fact the you're new to street riding might have something to do with it too. I can feel when my bike is uncomfortable as its the only bike I've owned and I've been riding it for almost 10 years now. Also, my '81 650 doesn't have all the new fangled tech that your '85 700 probably has ;). If my engine was overheating, I wouldn't know it until it seized and threw me into the ditch! I just keep up with the regular maintenance and hope there aren't any gnomes in there messing things up :)

There is a worm gear in there that is driven by the exhaust cam... and the shaft of the worm gear has an o-ring seated into a groove around it... This seals out the oil while allowing the worm-grear's shaft to turn -- the tach cable plugs into the shaft of the worm gear... it should'nt leak with or without the tach cable inserted -- if it leaks, the conclusion is that... ? The o-ring is bad?

I have an 85 Max(air head),just running speedo and turn/oil/bright indicators. No problems, no leaks because the tach was electronic.
