So after lurking on the forum for some time now ive found that my VIN# 4W5-000xxx is indeed a 650 midnight maxim but I'm not sure of the year? The vin identify thread confused me on the year, is it a 80 or an 81?

Thanks any help would be great!

Also the vin i pulled off the neck of the bike and is a shorty vin, Is there a 17 digit vin on this bike some where im missing? I ask because I need to put in for a lost title and wanted to know if the shorty verison will be sufficient for the DMV.

    Again thanks a million

Rules vary from state to state, but more than likely the number you need is the one it's titled under. My 750 seca is titled under it's shorty vin, my turbo seca, it's long vin (even though both have a long vin on the sticker). Rules changed in 1982, so it really could be either, but a 17 digit VIN would be found on a sticker on the left side of the neck if there is still one there.

Chacal says that's an 81 (no 1980 midnight model)

    You long vin should be:
JYA4W500-X-B-A-000xxx (where X is the check digit, and chacal tells you how to calculate it)

But given that it's an 81, I would think it's titled under the shorty vin

Do you haven any past registration papers or insurance papers? Those will likely have the same VIN that you've titled it under.

No I do not, this bike has had 2 owners in the past couple years working on this bobber build, I got her helping the last owner move and he just said take her. So I figure untill i get this titled I'm not going to put any money into her.

Off the the DMV tomorrow to see what can be done.

OH...so you aren't asking for a duplicate title or YOU, your asking on behalf of SOMEONE else, and then hoping to use that to title it in your name?

In that case (and again, rules vary from state to state but generally) you'll need the last titled owner of the bike to get the duplicate title. They probably won't just send that title over to you, it goes to the last owner in THEIR records.

There are title services out there if your trip to the DMV proves fruitless. I haven't used any of them, so I can't recommend anything.
