Hello, just bought an 82 maxim xj750j. I'm new to the xj bikes and I'm doing some work on it. Took it for a test ride and my rpm's where at 6000 and I was doing 60 mph. I checked and I verified I was in 5th gear. The rpm's seemed a little high. Can anyone tell me what the approximate rpm should be at 60 mph. Thanks, bill

That doesn't sound right. I was very recently following a friend on the highway who was riding a Kawasaki ZX-14. He accelerated to pass a riced-out Subaru station wagon and I stuck with him. I was just over 6000rpm on my XJ650. My speedo was pegged-out. He said he was going 90mph to make the pass 8O

Around 4400 RPM's at 60 is normal in 5th gear.

Are you sure your speedo is giving you good numbers? Mine is about 15% off, so it would *look* like I had those numbers, but from riding with others I know that 60 on my speedo means something much closer to 70. (I have a 650.)

Thanks for your help. I was thinking my speed was off too. Guess I should have someone follow me. Is it easy to replace/repair speed gear? Hoe much do they cost now days? Thanks again, bill

Do you have a smart phone, or can you borrow one? There is an app called "Speedview" that is a GPS speedometer. I know it's dead-on accurate because I've used it at work in my police car which has a certified calibrated speedometer and calibrated and verified radar unit.

I'll run with the radar on, displaying my speed, and Speedview open on my phone (phone located on the dashboard, not in my hand, so it's kosher under Michigan's text-and-drive law). The radar and Speedview always match exactly.

Sometimes Speedview lags a second or two behind when accelerating or decelerating, but it's completely accurate at steady speeds. You could tape the phone to your bars or tank and compare it to the speedometer.

That sounds high to me for sure for a 750. Just verified on the freeway right now, my 650 is at 62-65 MPH at 5K RPMs in 5th.

I was about 5k at 60 mph also. Can't figure out why was so high first ride. Maybe speedo cable was sticky from sitting for a couple years.

These bikes WANT to cruise at 6-6.5k rpms.

A good running bike could easily cruise in 3r or 4th at 60mph all day around 6.5k depending on weight, traffic and carb condition.

Here's an old thread about how I first started out shifting as a new rider with a high rpm bike. I've changed my shifting and cruising rpms after 3 years but the starter tips are still pretty good.

Definitely not unusual for a gauge that's been sitting to be sticky. When I first got my XJ the speedo went all the way up to a whopping 35mph. In fifth gear. At 4,000rpm.

Look in the FAQ suggestions part of the forum for Bigfitz's speedo how-to, it will explain what is involved in lubing the instruments.
