I've just brought out an 85' Maxim X that I bought over the winter and I'm curious about other peoples fuel consumption I had to switch over to reserve after only 135 KM's on my last tank of fuel??? Now I've been riding FI sportbikes for the last 10 years or so, which always got at least 230-250 KM's on a tank of fuel. Is there something wrong with my bike or is this normal? Also, does anyone know the size of the tank for an 85' XJ 750 Maxim? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

110 MILES THEN THE LOW FUEL LIGHT COMES ON, I HAVE BEEN RUNNING RICH SINCE I HAD THE CARBS FIXED(?).
TANK I THINK IS 2.6 GALLONS?

135 km = about 84 miles, your about dead nuts on with what I get when I'm feeling froggy with the X. Riding it modestly I got around 100 miles before switching over to reserve, then an additional 17 & decided I didn't want to try my luck anymore so I stopped for a fill up.

The Tank capacity is 3.43 gallons or 13 liters.

This link is an excellent source for Maxim X owners

I'm with MAX-X on this one. I usually fill up at about 80 miles on the trip odometer, and reset it to zeroes each time she's filled. With my bike the low fuel light comes on at about 90-95 miles. I average about 38 miles per gallon.

    Old thread but...
My 1985 Maxim-X 750, with new plugs, seems to get about 115 Km in the city, and smells like it's running rich.
It idles at about 1000 rpm.

I just ordered a new stock air filter from XJ4Ever, to replace the dirty K&N that's installed.

What else can I examine to get better gas mileage?
Does it have to be the carbs? :)

    BTW - Saw a beauty 1985 V-max 1200 this afternoon.

Pull the plugs and see if it really is running rich. Ash white to tan is good. Sooty black is rich.

    Thanks K-Moe,
    Here's 4 & 1 because they're easy. :)

If we are concerned about the ground electrode they look pretty clear.. But there is sooty residue around the inside of the threads. (more on 4)... These plugs have less that 300km on them.

Both look a tad rich. What are the pilot screws set at? Start a thread of your own so we can be thorough.
