So here is an interesting question...

I filled up the bike tonight, and after doing so went ahead and tried to reset my trip meter(which pretty much acts as my fuel gauge) back to zero. well for some reason all it did was spin around and around and the meter didn't budge. So i pulled the little black knob out of the tach, and after looking at it for a minute realized I have no idea how this little knob is attached. is it threaded on? glued?
so does anyone know how i might go about re-attaching this little black knob to my tach so I can keep track of my mileage???

    any suggestions would be appreciated!

    Thanks!

I'm a little confused...the tach? Are you referring to the whole instrument cluster? The odometer shouldn't have anything to do with the tachometer. It's part of the speedometer.

As far as the knob, there should be a tiny, I mean TINY screw there somewhere, either right down the middle of the knob, or maybe screwed in from the side, I forget since my trip odometer has been gone since I changed speedos. (wow, that phrase looks like I'm talking about a banana hammock)

Doesn't the trip odometer knob screw in, reverse threaded? I think you should have been spinning it in the opposite direction.

If yours just popped right out... Bad sign.

    This thread might help:

Ah, it's different for my bike, figures. If you scroll down far enough in that thread fintip posted, Schmuckoholic mentions the screw is a 750 thing.

Oops yeah sorry folks I meant the speedometer not the tach.... i was kind of half asleep when i posted the question.... I tried threading the thing back on, (both clockwise and counterclockwise) last night at the gas station, being careful not to force anything. After looking at it today in the sunlight I found the threads are completely shot. I guess they must have gotten a messed up sometime between 1982 and now hahaha. oh well it still kind of works anyway...

And don't worry Maximike. it's a good thing to change speedos from time to time...

Well that sucks. You could try locktite, or you could say 'screw it' (pun!) and put on some jbweld and consider them almost-dead dials and be willing to replace them if they go bad instead of servicing them. *shrug*

I'm liking the JB weld idea... might have to try it this weekend... If that doesn't work then ill just have to live with it. I don't feel like replacing my instruments over a stupid little knob.
