Ok, so let's address the speedo issue:

    1. probably a broken cable.

    2. Just in case it's not, put the bike on the center stand:
2a. disconnect the top of the cable from the gauges.
2b. have someone lean on the back so that the front tire is off the ground
2c. spin the rim and see if the cable top is turning.
    2d. if it is, the speedo head is bad. If it is not;
2d1. your cable is broken or
2d2. your speedo pickup on the axle is bad.
    3. re-attach the cable to the gauges.
    4. disconnect the cable at the speedo pickup on the axle.
    5. Spin the wheel and see if it turns where the tip of the cable should go
5a. if it spins, you've narrowed it down to the cable or gauge
5b. if it doesn't you've narrowed it down to the drive. BUT
5b1. it may be the drive OR
5b2. it may be the two-toothed ring in the rim.
    6. Pull the axle, remove the front rim, and check the condition of the two-toothed ring in the wheel hub. There should be two tabs that stick up and match into the speedo pickup. If they are good, then your pickup is bad. BUT quite often, those two tabs get bent down into the rim as people don't know how to put stuff back together and miss that small factor. As the axle gets tightened up, those tabs get bent in rather than being lined up into their slots. Without them mated into the speedo pickup, you won't have any speedo on the speedo :)

Let us know what you find..........

yeah, it's okay to bend them, but sometimes they get ground down if they're out of position. Make sure they aren't really short, if so it's not an expensive part. I just posted about this on another thread yesterday.

Here's the picture of the part, old vs. new. Not my picture, from this thread:

You should shift to second gear. Then when you hit the redline again, shift to 3rd. Then when you hit the redline, shift to 4th. Now the cops can't even catch up with you......then when you hit the redline you shift to 5th. Now you're just a blur in the left-hand lane. NOW when you hit redline.....uh--you may want to rein it in a little because you just overshot your exit by a few miles. LOL

Oh, that's not what you meant? heehee

in the 70's and 80's there was a 55mph national speed limit in response to an oil price spike, so they highlighted 55 on speedos and marked higher red to tell you you were speeding. same reason they made the 85 mph speedos.

It is just a simple mistake away from calling the morgue. Don't worry to much about it. I am sure someone will be making that call for you!!

Seriously though. These bike will easily do triple digits in good running condition. That is well beyond the ability of the speedo to keep up. That is also the reason behind the heavily stressed safety factors on the site.

Make sure the bike is in absolute perfect shape before trying to take it to the upper limits. It may be a thrill, but it deffinately is not a joke.
