Rains just stopped over here so decided to start the check over and servicing off this baby. All looks very nasty and rusty in there, the carbs, the inner two seem to have rusted away. Does the fairing need to come off to do the valves?.Just posted some pics, one is of a stray fuse any ideas.Hopefully with the info on this great site i can keep her running a bit longer. 8O

Valves - You shouldn't need to.
Fuse - the fuseholders fail, A quick bodge is to crimp in a blade type fuse.
Check your wiring diagram for the colours of the wires - that will tell you which fuse it is.
Rusty carb tops - shouldn't matter. It's possible only the outer two are chromed.

HOWEVER your regulator (The finned thing) worries me. How many wires has it got?
It should have four but it looks like yours may not even be a Yamaha one.
Check my gallery. A PO fitted an early one to a late bike and it cooked the battery. If yours hasnt got a plastic connector - it is not original.
This is close to my heart as I'm a sparkie!!!

Thanks yes, i now see that only the outer two are chrome. The regulator cant be the original as its at an angle and is held by only one screw as the other wont align, i will check the wires sunday.Gonna check the valves this week, got a feelin they never been done as the nuts seem like they never been touched. 8O

It sound like you have a bike that's going to need to be De-Bugged before you get-on with the finer points of rehabilitation.

    Get the Electrical situation smoothed-out.
An electrical problem can shut you right down.
Un-bugger the thing before you start thinking that one problem is really another.

The bike is a xj600, 1990 or as you would know it an fj600, one thing i never thought about was the electrical system amongst the rust , valves and carbs. The weather is better here today, yesterday it was like a monsoon and as you can see from the gallery all the works taking place in the garden :D

Looks like the carb "hats" are just rusty. The bike needs a good clean up and TLC.
Start out by getting a manual and do all of the maintenance required. Clean up all the rusty areas and paint with good quality primer and paint.

Just taken the valve measurements and the intakes are all .004 and the exhaust results are all .005, just wondered where this comes in on the chart as the range looks different. Would they be ok or need adjustment, thanks

hi there , yes got a manual, but the mrs has hidden it, diy time :D .Just rechecked the valves and they are in check so all my poor running probs must be carbs i hope. Got one week to get the xj running good as its being used to commute in and around the olympics in london. They say it will be traffic gridlock, lets hope the xj600 slips by the traffic great. Toured scotland by motorcycle last year and i can say i absolutely love the scots and their land ,was cheering andy murray in the wimbledon final last week  Just added some photos of my valve adjustment today, can you spot my helper.

yes had a go at valves , now iam moving on to me carbs, looks like previous owner may of had a go as the rack screws are missing underneath. These guys must be the cause of the poor running and engine vibration. :?
