    Hello everyone,

    Lately I have been noticing an odd harmonic sound and not sure where it is coming from. Almost sounds like a very low version of someone making a wine glass sing by rubbing the rim.

    With my baffles removed, I couldn't hear it that well until I started using earplugs. Even with earplugs it's tricky to make out...maybe I will be able to identify the specifics as far as when it is happening once I get the baffles back in (ie RPMs, speed, etc...).

    Any ideas or similar experiences?

    Tach (or speedo) believe it or not. Yamaha mechanical instruments make some very entertaining noises when they start to fail, or are in serious need of lubricating.

    My speedo doesn't work and the interior is cracked (I have no idea how the PO even did that seeing how the exterior is perfect :lol: ) So I have been meaning on getting aftermarket gauges. I will make sure to lube them up nicely. Light machine oil?

    Possible 'fin ringing'?

    This is taken from Len's catalog:

    Cylinder Fin Insulators:

    yy5) OEM Yamaha rubber CYLINDER FIN RUBBER INSULATORS. These are the small, rubber, wedge-shaped noise absorbers that fit between adjacent levels of the cylinder head cooling fins at various places on the heads. Usually hardened or missing from original motors. Replacing these insulators with new ones really helps to quiet down an engine, and especially eliminates the fin "ringing" which can sound very much like valvetrain noise, while giving your engine that authentic, original appearance.

    HCP1840A OEM cylinder head rubber FIN INSULATOR, for the RH side of engine. Differs between models, but normally use 8-10 per engine on the right side. Fits all XJ550, XJ650, XJ700, XJ750, and XJ900RK models. Each:
    $ 2.50

    HCP1840ASET10 OEM cylinder head rubber FIN INSULATORS, for the RH side of engine. Set of 10:
    $ 21.00

    HCP1840B OEM cylinder head rubber FIN INSULATOR, for the LH side of engine. Differs between models, but normally use 15 per engine on the left side. Fits all XJ550, XJ650, XJ700, XJ750, and XJ900RK models. Each:
    $ 2.00

    HCP1840BSET15 OEM cylinder head rubber FIN INSULATORS, for the LH side of engine. Set of 15:
    $ 22.95
