When I had my 650, I was kicking around the idea of putting a cylinder head temperature gauge on it. Now I think I wanna do it on the 750.

You can get them with a wire lead that has a loop contact on the end that you can simply put under a bolt/screw...

But where would be the most effective place for it to sense from? Of course those YICS passage bolts look tempting...but I don't see it as a good place for a sensor...

    Any ideas?

Get that going, a vacuum gauge (hey why not four LOL) put in an o2 sensor and have an air/fuel ratio gauge, oil temp/pressure, charging volts...hell this thing will look like a 747 cockpit

I assume we are talking about an air head here ? so the temp' gauge tells you that it's hot, what you going to do about it ?

Turn it off. See what the problem is.

I noticed when I had an intake boot gasket fail on the 650, the head temp got hot enough from the lean condition to roast the high temp paint I'd used on the plug boots. Mighta seen that coming earlier on, had I had a reference to look at...didn't really recognize what the problem was until it began showing up at idle...

You might be better off cruising at low revs than shutting it down.

So, all that aside...where to put the sensor?

i've got a temp sensor on the cam chain tunnel with epoxy putty, stop and go traffic drives it wild. i've seen 250 at a long light, steady highway is about 180/190

In the world of 2 stroke scooter racing the temp sensors usually go under the spark plug. You could do 4, with a switch (or with multiple displays), and be able to monitor each cylinder.

Interesting. I would have thought our XJs run hotter than that.

There's a lot of wind on it while moving and the epoxy might insulate it a bit. The 250 might be closer to what a real one would see. This one is for a water cooled bike, I just stuck it on there

Ah, water-cooled. I see. I have been wondering how hot an air-cooled XJ actually runs. I would be surprised if it was 200 or under.
