I road the bike a few days ago and went on a 150 mi trip ( half of it was in the rain) ran fine all day. But now i went to start it after a few days of sitting i has no spark. I suspect the coil but i wanted to know if there was any other fixes that it could be before i go drop the money and wait for a coil to come in. If is the coil are there any better coils i could put in other than stock

Don't just asume the coils are bad, there are test procedures to find out. It will get expensive real fast guessing and replacing parts.

You need a service manual and a multi-meter to start with.
Tell us what bike you are working on.
Start by checking the fuses, make sure they are clean and tight. If you have an original fuse box replace it with a new blade style one. Most XJ's have a kickstand saftey that will dissable the ignition when its is down. They are known to give problems.

I have a bad manual and it cranks all day im not getting any spark to the coils my fuse box has been replaced. I checked the fuses all good and clean still no spark its getting gas. Let all the gas out of the bowls just in case it was bad or what ever (not that i think it would be after 3 days). Shes still a no go how do i check the coils what are the suppose to get in to them and well i know im not getting enough out for a spark. Also my battery is only a few months old.

I also doubt it's the coils.

Your bike has a safety circuit that prevents it from starting if it's in gear with the sidestand down; or in gear at all unless you pull the clutch in.

Your problem is most likely the sidestand switch. It could also be wiring, or any of the other components in the safety circuit; but because of its location, hanging down there in the road spray, the sidestand switch should be at the top of the list.

Also: with even a slightly flat battery, the bike will spin the starter all day long but not have enough current left to power the ignition. One dead giveaway to this condition is a "pop" as soon as you LET GO of the starter button.

PM me with your email address and I can send you wiring diagrams and circuit diagnostics from the factory manual.

Sounds like you need to have a look at the alternator brushes. They're mounted IN the cover.

Factory manual scans on the way. Which manual do you have, the Clymer?

Yeah i have clymer its not as nice as my haynes manual but its alright but today i got a chance to really look at it three out of the four plugs where perfectand the first has some issues i knew about running rich( float sticks) so i cleaned them off and pulled the tank so i could get a look at the coils and everything just to see if there was physical damage or pinched wires, ect. Soi plulled the first plug and cleaned it off and hit the starter no choke nothing it just started and idled ( not great but it did it ). So i thought this was wierd so i began checking other things out and it apeared as if some of the wires had partially came unplugged, and i think part of the problem was that i filled the tank and left for a few days and cosidering that the bike is black and outside i think the tank lost all of its breathing room cause it over flowwed as soon as i took it off. But it back to running great and starts and idles fine

    Thanks for all the help
