I was riding my bike the other night and about 200 yards from pulling into my home I get an oil warning come up on the system. It showed OIL and the red warning flashed but the OIL text then went away. I shut the bike down and put it on the centerstand in my garage. Went out the next morning looked at the oil level from the site tube and it was fine. Is that switch oil level or oil pressure from the pump? Any ideas what might cause this? Am I looking at a malfunctioning Oil switch?

I'll check it but I only have about 500 miles on this filter and oil since I changed it.

where you in a turn or on a hill when it went off the switches can be touchy so a lot of people over fill a tad (so there is only a small bubble of air at the top of the sight glass)

Small grade hill coming down to my place. Never an issue before. No turn, straight shot. Oil level is just a hair below the top tick mark to the side of the sight tube. Maybe I will add a little more oil to get it to that upper mark.

You want it just ABOVE the upper mark with just a bubble showing; this is usually about a 200cc "overfill." The bubble is your insurance against a stuck float filling the crankcase with gas; and the slight overfill will keep the oil level sensor happy.

Check your oil level before every ride; if one day the bubble is suddenly gone then investigate before starting the motor.

The oil switch is a level float type and not a pressure switch. The do get sludge in them over time and give erratic response. At your next oil change remove the switch and give it a good cleaning with some spray brake cleaner. Be sure to spray inside and flush it out real good.

Solid advice. Except for where it's located. If the bike's just gone back in service, there's a good chance that after a few good heat cycles and a couple of oil changes it will free up.

Otherwise... the next time you have the exhaust system off...

Thanks again for the information. I put a little more oil in yesterday and took it back out for a ride. No issues.
