I am rebuilding my fathers old xj550 and i was wondering if there is any after market exhausts that i could put on the bike to make it have a better "rumble" sound to it. Any suggestions? i dont know much about after market exhaust so any help will be appreciated! thank you and god bless!!

Your Maxim will never rumble like a V-twin, but it may have a different sound to it than you hear when you ride it. I recorded mine with a high-quality mp3 recorder and was pleasantly surprised with the sound of a stock XJ. Here's the link:

At about 3 minutes I make a low-rpm pass, followed closely by a Healey Davidson. At just past 4 minutes I come back by at about 7000rpm. I'm surprised at how different it sounds than it does to me when I'm riding it.

Sportster mufflers before 2003 used on ebay or try JCWhitney.com.

i have a set of jardine slipons on my xj550. and it sounds way better than stock! It has a nice throaty sound. I think they run around 2-3 hundred. My buddy has a 4into1 exhaust on his 650 and it at higher rpm it sounds like a rocket but not as good as mine at low rpm.

I love the sound of the MAC exhaust on my 1100 but I'm not sure if they have anything for the 550's

Most mufflers have a strap or mounting tab for a strap that attaches to the bolt just under the rear foot pegs. You may end up having to fab something.

I really like my Dunstall exhaust pipes. I think you can get them from JC Whitney and others. I think Engorged makes them. Regardless, it's about as throaty a sound as you can get from a 550. I found this youtube clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tV-WWx44sAg. That's exactly whet mine sounds like'

Wow that sounds GREAT! I vowed to leave this bike stock, but now you have me thinking about this. Way to go. Wonder what it would be like on a 650...
