1982 Max 750. 7900 miles. Why did they paint it like that?? With enamel!!! :x Oh well, another thing I get to fix. :)

Overall it's in good shape. Of course I will be busy for a while making it truly road worthy. :D

It is in good shape overall. It was laid down at one point so the tank has some small dings and obviously the carbs need to be rebuilt and valves checked and brakes gone over and...... You know, the normal 30 year old bike stuff.

But again I really don't know what would compell someont to paint it with enamel. :?

First things first though. Get it running and stopping right. :)

Hey Biggs...I thought I saw that bike on CL...looked pretty clean? Looks like you have a nice bike there.

Did I run into you at 5 corners gas station in Cedarburg a couple months back? If it wasn't you, some old dude is running around with a Seca that looks just like yours.

I know where Five Corners is but I wasn't there. And thanks on the Max. I'm looking forward to giving Len some more money. :D

And yes, it was on CL. I low balled the guy and he went right for it. I should have gone lower still. :)

Yeah, you're an old dude....sorry to break it to you. It was hard for me to accept too until I realized that it just means I can join the KMA club.

    LOL

BTW- your "project" looks better then most members bikes! And the enamel was for three reasons.....cost, bucks, dollars!

    Little update:

The shaft oil has been changed as well as the motor oil is drained. Why not refilled, you might ask? Take a look:

The PO must have eaten spinach as the head was rounded and ultimately I had to use a Vise Grip to get the bypass bolt out. :x A new one is on it's way. Thanks Len. :)

Also any suggestions on how to remove these? The mangled one in particular. They have Kroil on them now but will those 'Grabbit' type bits work here?

    Thanks for any input. :D

Tried the extractor method on my MC and it looked just like yours-didn't work. So I carefully drilled, using a tiny bit, the head of the screw into a nice long slot to fit a flat head into it. I then used a nice thin flat head driver with my vice grips attached to remove the screw. This of course was after soaking like you are. Be prepared for a nasty MC inside.

I used a small impact driver on the 'good' one and your 'drilling a slot' method on the 'bad one' and got it open. I don't know, looks all right to me. I think I'll button it back up and call it good. :D

Good job, well I must say your MC looks better than mine did when I opened the crypt but still...

30 minutes of Deepcreep, q-tips, and some sandpaper and...

+1 to the Allen head MC screws they are exactly what was needed. Love em.

    OH NO YOU BETTER NOT.

Dude, seriously? The bike is how old and has how many miles on it? It never sat?

The original brake master cylinder and caliper seals had a factory-recommended lifespan of TWO YEARS. TWO.

Now, I'll concede a certain amount of designed-in "safety margin." Whatever it might have been, 30 years is way past it.

Rebuild that master cylinder. If it's in good shape, it'll be easy and cheap.

Check the date codes on the (4-year lifespan) brake lines. Replace.

And the date codes on the tires (6 years max.)

Test the compression? Check the valves.

You didn't buy this one new.

Fitz is right, replace all of the expired rubber goods and you'll be better off . But I must say you have a really great starting point there. We have seen a lot worse and those were brought back with many hours and big bucks to make them right.

It's all good biggs! I saw your smiley face and was pretty sure you were joking. That's why I only nudged you with my MC picture. The problem is that not everyone would be. Fitz has seen too many be lazy and not take their bike seriously. How many times has someone been given good advice only to ignore it thinking that it's just too much work.

My personal feeling is that brakes can NEVER fall under the I'll take care of it later category......Dang I'm gonna go check mine over right now!

I did go with the Allen head screws. I switched my 650 to those last year when I did those brakes. So much nicer.

I want to apologize if I mislead anyone with my "looks all right to me" comment. Sorry about that. I do want this thing to be able to stop and truly do appreciate the concern. :)

As far as checking the compression I would like to do that (on my 650 also) but I need to pick up a gauge first. Who makes a good gauge? I probably already know this answer but are the Harbor Freight ones worth anything? If not, any recommendations?

The picture below is just to show the Allen head screws. It's nowhere near ready to be ridden yet. I just have the cover back in place (with a few fresh scratches).

Nice paint job. Both of them. :( The ugly blue underneath feels awfully soft as well. Nothing like two layers of the wrong paint. I don't think that was ever a factory color, was it? I only remember black and red.

Carbs are off ready for a though scrubbing and hopefully the new o-rings, seals, gaskets,ect... will be here tomorrow. :)

Looks like this was hit by a drill bit or hard to turn at one time. At least it turns. This will need to go.

That messed up idle mixture screw had me a bit worried. As I was turning it out it became more and more difficult to turn. Finally came out though. I'm going to replace it with one out of a spare rack I have. The spare is from a 750 and has the brass screws also. It fits and they both look the same. Any reason it wouldn't work?

My safety glasses also got a nice blast of carb cleaner. 8O That's why we wear them. :D

Here's one dirty emulsion tube. The jets were similar. So far I've only broken into one carb. I'm done for today, too darn hot.

The PO said the tires are new and they certainly look it. the last two digits on the date code are '12'. If I read that properly that's 2012. Correct?

I believe those are for fairing lights. All the 750 Maxims have that extra pair of connectors that are in parallel with the head light plug.

Edit: Strike that. I think that's correct for the brake line to be on the outside.

Got it running good and smooth. Now I'll start on some cosmetic issues. Gasoline works really good removing the paint from the tank.

No more black painted duct tape on the busted up instrument housing. I found one at a local salvage yard with much less damage. Some fiberglass repair on the inside and JB Weld on the outside as filler and it's just like new. :) Almost.

Doing a great job. I bought my maxin 750 used and liked it a lot in 83 traded in on a seca 900 a year later. I got a great deal on a seca750 leftover in 85 for $1800 but i liked the maxim better maybe i was spoiled from the 900 but the 750 just did not do it for me at the time ended up selling it for what i paid for it and bought a litre bike. Back in the 80s was on a more power trip lol

Grab rails, one polished, one not.

    Both polished.

Since I'm painting it yellow I thought the black stripe should be yellow too.

    Polished with a yellow stripe.

Here I just put the tank on to get a picture of what it will look like. I want to let the paint harden for another week yet before I put gas in it. Still lots to do. I might need to revisit the side covers. I'm thinking going back to black on the bit that shows above the aluminum frame and the part that shows below the right side frame. We shall see.

XS 650 badges to be put on yet. I will have to put a dummy screw in the holes.

Elbow grease. First strip off any factory clear coat and then a dry 220 grit sandpaper followed by a wet sanding with 400,1000,1500 and then 2000 grit. Finish it off with metal polish. I've been using Magic Mix. Works good.
