hello all regarding my 1981 xj750 i am only getting .50 volts at idle and 1.75 volts at around 6k rpms. i hve isolated wires from brushes and stator to thr rectifier so we can skip the loosewire/bad fuse idea.

stator wires test at .08 ohms, brushes test at 4.3 -5.6 all within reason according to haynes book. i replaced the stator and rectifier off a running bike.

his brings me to possible fried rotor but i am ite sure they rarely go bad and if so why is it testing good.

bruhes are good, stator is clean, connections are good. im at a loss

thks in advance for any help

OK, check the 8 wire(?) connection behind the battery....I found that mine had actually melted when my charging system failed....

Also, this is your one warning....DO NOT BUY A STATOR FROM ELECTROSPORT(or Ricks as he sell them)!!! If you want to meet a whole bunch of people who will tell you about their buying them and having them fail right out of the box, then having to go through hell to get it replaced, take a wander over to the Vstrom forum and search "Stator"....and you'll meet lots and lots of them! The ones that didn't fail out of the box had very crappy capability....like 12.8 at 5000 rpm
This is a real case of cheap=junk.

Re: chargng problem, not the usual supects

oh yea, forgot to mention, new battery, everything was totally rewired when i chopped it into a cafe racer, unfortunately someone i gave it to buggered it up but thats another story. i cant say when it started because when i bought the bike i only test drove it for a mile or so and it may never have worked. i have had the stator cover off a number of times, rotor is clean, copper disc where brushes meet is clean im really leaning toward the rotor but it wanted to see if anyone had a better idea before i spend more money. the tests i listed above are with the wires from stator and brushes going directly to rectifier and battery unhooked from the circut.

How do you get .5 and 1.75 running when it takes about 10 to make the bike run. Your doing something wrong.

the .5 and the 1.75 are with the lead to the battery unhooked that is straight off the rectifier bypassing the battery

adrian1 is the hero of this thread, cant thank you enough for the link to the troubleshooting chart.

the culprit was the brown wire, i had checked continuity and resistance to the brushes but neglected where it feeds into the switched fuse block, i assumed (silly me) that the new wire i had run was good, after a continuity test, turns out it was faulty, guess you get what you pay for and i got the wire at harbor freight tools (cheap) i couldnt visibly see any breach to the coating of the wire but end to end it had a big fat goose egg on resistance, who woulda thought 8 cents worth of wire would cause such a hassle.

also thanks polock for pointing out the obvious, sometimes we tend to over think things in the heat of battle and need a nudge back into the realm of common sense.
