I have a 1982 Yamaha Maxim XJ750J and the glass on the gauges is broken. Has anyone been successful at replacing the glass on these and if so how?

    Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the link - although there is some good info there it really doesn't explain how to actually change the glass. I know I can get some place to cut the glass but first I have to get it out of the cover. The glass is sandwiched between two pieces of plastic - it looks like they are glued together. Also the glass is wrapped with a rubber seal.

Any ideas on how to separate the plastic without breaking it, and is it possible to get a new rubber seal? If not, I could use any suggestions on how to keep the glass from leaking if I am able to replace it.

I have thought about replacing the entire cluster with another of the same kind or with something else entirely. The link mention that xs1100 gauges are a possibility so I can look into that as well.

Once you remove the instruments from the cluster housing you have to VERY CAREFULLY separate the glass and surrounding plastic components from the cluster housing. I used a few very fine flat head tweaker screwdrivers and a lot of patience to break the glue free. After you do that the same goes towards removing those plastic bits from the glass.

Take your new glass and lightly glue it back in place and you are done.

They seem to be a tight fit, so take your time and if you start to get frustrated walk away. There is no rush in making sure you don't break anything - a lesson I can attest to.

I would suggest the use of a heat gun to help loosen/release the old glue. might help. good luck, just go slow, be patient, and take frequent breaks to drink beer :D Let us know how it goes

I was able to get the inner plastic piece out with a skinny screwdriver and a good bit of patience. Didn't have a heat gun but might have made it easier. I'm painting the plastic parts now and will get a piece of glass cut this week. I'll post some pics when I've got it completed.

I sent Len an email but he doesn't carry that seal. He recommended using a silicone sealant/caulking. I'll see how it goes.
