    Hi
I have a 1985 Maxim 700. On the way back from work, I noticed that my tach is not working....

Is this a major or a minor repair?

    Thanks
    Ron

Electric or mechanical? I'd look it up, but the fiche is acting up.

Unless the tach quit because the motor blew up, it's minor.

The Tack gets "Stuck" when the Bearing-Bushing gets dried-out and accumulates dust.

Remove the Instrument from the Compartment.
Spray the Bearing-Bushing with Contact-ReNu or an Electronic Parts Cleaner that will not harm the Instrument.
One that evaporates immediately is very effective.

Using a PRECISION OILER with light oil ...
Place 1 or 2 Drops of Oil on the Bearing.
Manually "Exercise" the Instrument moving the needle to the Right and Back a few times.

Apply the Lube at the Bearing on the Back Side of the Instrument:
2 Drops around the Brass Trunnion.

Not to contradict you in any way, Rick.
It's all and well with the lubrication, but as I've discovered after opening and lubing the electronic tach, the error may well lie in corroded contacts elsewhere in the cable loom.

I guess it is a hard question to answer....but I think that I will start with the "stuck" solution first then go deeper if needed

I will keep you informed as to the solution.

    Many thanks Guys
