    What could it mean if I get a popping sound and a big puff of air back into the airbox from the carbs?

    Two things;
    Carbs need servicing and most imporntant your valves need to be adjusted.

    98% of all the posts on XJ Chat deal with either carbs or valves. Just once, I'd like to see one of the wizards post ' It's nothing - just run some seafoam through it and it will be like new again', but I don't think that's going to happen! ( place little smiley faced thing here)

    You should have mentioned that in the first post.
    Re check your carb sync and idle mixture. I suspect it idles well then pops back when you give it throttle. That would indicate one or more cylinders are lean at idle.

    SeaFoam and other gas additives are good preventive use items but will not fix problems most of the time.

    Hey now, don't have a cow. Sorry for not putting it in the first post. I was using my phone to post and I did not have much time, so I just typed a few things and hit post. Unfortunately, I am waiting on some funds so that I can finally get my colortune plug. That would make sense since it runs fine (and rich) with the enrichment circuit on. I would richen it myself, but I have no clue which one is lean.

    take a look at your plugs
    white = lean
    black = rich
    light brown = good
