I just purchase my first motorcycle. This is a xs1100 1983 (canadian). I would like to find a post that explains the differences between xs and xj. Especially if they share the same parts???

    thanks

    Welcome to the site !!
It's all about styling and cosmetics.
Spiral rims, more teardrop tank shape than the SPECIAL XS1100
Don't expect Maxim 1100 trim parts to work on your bike.

I think they also dropped the vacuum advance, so only get ignition parts for your bike, otherwise the motors are basically the same.

    Welcome to the forum mate.
So that will be an XJ1100 from 1983 and not an XS1100.
The engines are mainly the same, except the XJ has got the YICS cylinder head, the middle gearbox and final drive are the same. The wheels are the same as the XS1100 Sport, the forks are different as they have air assist linked by an air line between the forks, i think the XS Sport had a valve on top of each fork leg. Brake calipers are the same as XS Sport, but the XJ has got a linked system. Ignition systems are different between the XS and XJ. Carbs are different.
You'll find a lot more info at www.xs11.com.

There is basicly no difference in the engine/chassi, its the tank and trim that is very different. The wheels will interchange between the XS/JX1100, I have XJ wheels on my XS11, I like the swirll pattern.
Most every engine or carb part will interchange but there are some small differences in jetting and engine controls.

That is most definitely an xj1100.

11G in the VIN is the designator for the XJ1100.
The YICS, octopus, wheels, gauges confirm that.

Looks like a good starting point.

You could upgrage to new modern shocks but the XJ11 shocks are prety good and they are rebuildable and tuneable. I use them on my XS11, V-Max and XJ11. Keep them, if you decide not to use them I need the rubber shock boots.
